The funniest thing to me - a British person educated in Britain - about the Odyssey nonsense apparently erupting over on Twitter, is that when I needed a classic story to include in my most recent book, I went with the Odyssey because "Everyone knows it." Everyone but that one guy, it seems.

Every year I write a short story connected to my Vicar Man series of books and post it on my blog as a Winter Holiday gift to everyone. Here's this year's: weylund.wixsite.com/my-site/post... #BookSky #ShortStory

A Gift To Keep Out The Cold
As is by now traditional, the story I have for you this year is not the story I had planned to write. That one will have to wait on the shelf, beside all the other stories that I've put aside to wait ...

For anyone who's missed me, aim better next time; but if you're wondering where I've been, the answer is mostly in bed. And for those of you who *I've* missed (hi Jimmy!) I can't promise you I'll be around all that regularly yet, but it is very good to be back.

Libraries are one of the most radical social institutions we have, because they’re based on the idea that *everyone* has the right to information, for free. It’s also what makes them crucial to democracy. I will never stop yelling about this!

There are gay themes and characters in Le Guin’s novels in the same way, and probably for the same reason, as there are in Neil Gaiman’s: to match real life. So naturally, in both cases, people kick up a fuss and say they’re overdoing it.

Various writing and stationary implements have been stabbed into holes in his back.
These include pens, pencils, highlighter pens, and a black pencil with a topper in the shape of a vampire bat.

If you’re me, this counts as work.
A large sugary bath bun sitting on a white plate, next to a white cup and saucer decorated with purple flowers. The cup is mostly full of a dark, frothy, hot chocolate.
Rather worryingly, inscribed inside the rim of the cup are the words “I could poison you.”
The background of the image is dark grey blanket, suggesting breakfast in bed.

Somewhat crossly, to Youngest Child: "Don't just leave those bags on the floor! Come down and put them away nicely! Oh, I am setting you so much maths!" Pause. *Hitting the "print" button*: "I realise now that that's a reward and not a threat, however I am doing it anyway."

Youngest Child: "If you were in an anime, what would the title be?" "My Nuisance Child Keeps Bothering Me While I'm Trying To Write This Book. Occasionally the characters in the book would come to life and demand to know why I wasn't getting on with their story." "That actually sounds like fun."

The best advice I (and pretty much every Pratchett fan I know) have on reading Terry Pratchett is *not* to start from the beginning and work your way through. His style developed hugely after that first book, and continued to develop throughout the series.

I have a few writers I can safely read without any risk of them influencing my style (unfortunately this is often because I was already influenced at a young age) so when I’m writing I tend to stick to those.

In our family this is considered normal.
A screenshot of a string of text messages.
They read: “Please don’t eat any of the bananas. They are for science!” with the word “science” in all caps, followed by “Any bananas left after the scientist had gone to camp can safely be eaten.”
Thus second message is then amended “Probably” and finally, because I am a fusspot, corrected with “*has*”

The healthy* part of the family has gone out to visit friends. Which was a terrible plan, because they’ve left Youngest Child and I alone, with the holiday leftovers and — thanks to a sporadic high temperature — absolutely no common sense.
A small, round, china plate with brown detailing on the rim, liberally piled with very inexpertly made panettone French toast, powdered with icing sugar, daubed with brandy cream, and topped with raspberries.
Why did someone buy raspberries in December?
Your guess is as good as mine, but we’ve made the best possible use of them.
There is a cake fork resting on the side of the plate, and just at the top of the image can be seen the green toes of a curly Cthulhu, the bottom half of an orange deady bear, and a bat-shaped collar brooch.

I am exceedingly grateful that this flu-bug waited till all the birthdays were out of the way before it descended. And also that I had trays of party food left, so I don’t have to try to cook. Now if it could just be equally considerate in going away again, that would be lovely
