The best advice I (and pretty much every Pratchett fan I know) have on reading Terry Pratchett is *not* to start from the beginning and work your way through. His style developed hugely after that first book, and continued to develop throughout the series.

(Someone made a “Which Discworld book should I start from?” flowchart, once, which is probably still out there on the internet somewhere. The later books obviously weren’t included, but as I recall it was pretty good)

DO YOU LIKE GOTH SHIT? Start with Mort, the first of the Death books. DO YOU LIKE DRAGONS? Start with Guards! Guards! the first of the Watch books. DO YOU LIKE ANTITHEISM? Start with Small Gods, a standalone skewering of organized religion. From there, follow this guide to find your next book.
