The funniest thing to me - a British person educated in Britain - about the Odyssey nonsense apparently erupting over on Twitter, is that when I needed a classic story to include in my most recent book, I went with the Odyssey because "Everyone knows it." Everyone but that one guy, it seems.

Every year I write a short story connected to my Vicar Man series of books and post it on my blog as a Winter Holiday gift to everyone. Here's this year's: weylund.wixsite.com/my-site/post... #BookSky #ShortStory

A Gift To Keep Out The Cold
As is by now traditional, the story I have for you this year is not the story I had planned to write. That one will have to wait on the shelf, beside all the other stories that I've put aside to wait ...

Libraries are one of the most radical social institutions we have, because they’re based on the idea that *everyone* has the right to information, for free. It’s also what makes them crucial to democracy. I will never stop yelling about this!

If you’re me, this counts as work.
A large sugary bath bun sitting on a white plate, next to a white cup and saucer decorated with purple flowers. The cup is mostly full of a dark, frothy, hot chocolate.
Rather worryingly, inscribed inside the rim of the cup are the words “I could poison you.”
The background of the image is dark grey blanket, suggesting breakfast in bed.

In our family this is considered normal.
A screenshot of a string of text messages.
They read: “Please don’t eat any of the bananas. They are for science!” with the word “science” in all caps, followed by “Any bananas left after the scientist had gone to camp can safely be eaten.”
Thus second message is then amended “Probably” and finally, because I am a fusspot, corrected with “*has*”

The healthy* part of the family has gone out to visit friends. Which was a terrible plan, because they’ve left Youngest Child and I alone, with the holiday leftovers and — thanks to a sporadic high temperature — absolutely no common sense.
A small, round, china plate with brown detailing on the rim, liberally piled with very inexpertly made panettone French toast, powdered with icing sugar, daubed with brandy cream, and topped with raspberries.
Why did someone buy raspberries in December?
Your guess is as good as mine, but we’ve made the best possible use of them.
There is a cake fork resting on the side of the plate, and just at the top of the image can be seen the green toes of a curly Cthulhu, the bottom half of an orange deady bear, and a bat-shaped collar brooch.

While I remember, a short PSA: Some people like to rip the paper from their presents. Others try to keep the paper intact (perhaps to reuse, perhaps they just enjoy it). In either case the *only* thing that matters is the enjoyment of the person doing the unwrapping.

Not intended as a sacrifice, the Gavle Goat is still routinely burned to the ground. This year, though, the straw it was made from contained a large amount of seeds, with the result that it instead met its doom at the hands* of a flock of jackdaws and one confused but very determined duck *beaks.

At some point, you're going to get a job offer that you can't accept. No time, not your skillset, whatever, you're a bad fit. The best thing you can do in this situation is to say "I'm not the person you're looking for, but I bet I know who is." It's fun to be the guy who knows a guy!

The problem with trying to clean dirt off a key while you are typing, is that if you aren't careful you end up inserting a random letters into the middle of your text. I just spent a minute trying to scrape something off the "O" and now it looks as if my manuscript is haunted.
