I've been talking to quite a few Conservatives for a piece ahead of their conference, and it's striking how many proactively brought up a reason why they think this year's event will be more positive than last: the fact Robert Jenrick won't be there. Such unananimity of dislike is rare.

Sorry, this is dumb/ahistorical. UK sanctions against South Africa 1985/86 were also largely "symbolic". But Thatcher had to be dragged kicking and screaming, and the apartheid regime devoted huge resources to stopping them - just as the Israeli govt is now. Symbols *really* matter here..

Every incentive rewards debt, and the Treasury has refused to release the forecasts and comparability assessments behind each nation’s cover, even under FOI. Every funding review now underway should put the machinery in scope before recommending a single fee rise.
