The invisible labor (often performed by women and marginalized folks) that keeps organizations afloat remains hidden and uncompensated. But those musing about AI's "transformation" of work have probably always benefited from this kind of labor in all parts of their life and don't see it as work.

We're hiring a part-time, temporary Data Services Fellow in my department! This role would be great for a current MLIS student who wants to build experience in data librarianship, or others looking to pick up some experience in the field. We are considering remote candidates. 📚

Imagine if the academic library was allowed to simply be what it is instead of having to chase down hype or novelty in order to secure level funding (i.e. a funding cut). "Running the university like a business" has utterly failed our students, our workers, and society itself.

Faculty: libraries and librarians need your advocacy BEFORE our collections are shuttered and our workers are fired. Whether you think your library is in trouble, and it almost definitely is, write to your provost and tell them how essential the library and library staff are to your work. Right now.

"You have to use AI." ...why?
People keep saying that AI is inevitable.

Like Bartleby, I'd prefer not to...

We "have to use it!"

My response to that is simply... WHY? Why is it being pushed so much and into so many things? Once you've gotten people to cede their decision making to an algorithm, eventually they'll stop thinking for themselves.

Why would I outsource thinking for myself to a machine? I have a brain.

This question can be asked/answered the same way for just about every industry, frankly. Libraries would be so much better off if we spent funds on staff and core services rather than chasing shiny objects. But funders never want to pony up for the core stuff; it doesn't get you a spotlight. 📚

The reality is the opposite. Librarians are essential to a successful research community on campus. Student success is improved when they can get 1:1 research help from librarians. And yet libraries are consistently underfunded and undervalued, librarians always underpaid.

Libraries (all libraries but specifically talking about academic libraries here) are frequently the first to face budget cuts and layoffs. Libraries are frequently seen as less important to student retention and success, librarians seen as less important to research than faculty.

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

Real leadership in libraries means looking your community - including your boss's boss - in the face and saying to them that fewer staff means less services. There is no way around it. That's the truth of the matter. The community is either okay with that or not.
