The loss of 200 year old trees is significant anywhere. But in the Sonoran desert, a delicate ecosystem that can be quite harsh, their loss is devistating.

I graduated from Cornell in 1999. I went to parties at this very house (after hours!) and was often quite intoxicated (college!). Some of my friends were #JaneDoe. I wasn't #JaneDoe only by sheer luck--not bc I did something different. We need to teach our boys to be better. 💔

Cognitive effects of AI [over]use: * Never-skilling - Failure to learn * Deskilling - Degradation of competency * Mis-skilling - Acquisition of poor reasoning (false AI info) * Automation bias - Over-reliance on AI * False proficiency - Absence of competency revealed when Al is unavailable.
* Never-skilling- Failure to develop foundational linical reasoning competencies during formative training due to excessive Al substitution for coanitive effort. This produces an inability to dlemonstrate Al-independent competence required for progression, gracluation o licensure.
* Deskilling- Degradation of established competencies in already trained clinicians due to prolonaed Al reliance Existing neural pathways weaken from disuse, but foundational architecture romains intact
* Mis-skilling- Acquisition of incorrect clinical reasoning patterns through uncritical adoption of erroneous or biased AI outputs. Clinical schemas become contaminated by Al errors or bias. leadina to svstematic distortion of diagnostic or management reasonina
* Metacognitive calibration- Accurate internal modelina of one's own comnetence boundaries and the alianment between subiective confidence and obiective performance that enables appropriate help-seeking behavior.
* Automation bias - The tendency to over-rely on automated decision support systems, accenting their outnuts uncriticallv even when contradictory clinical evidence exists; susceptibility is heightened among novices who lack the foundational schemas needed to evaluate A recommendations.
* False proficiency- A transient performance state in which Al-assisted clinical reasoning appears adequate during training masking the absence of underlving independent competency that becomes evident only when Al support is withdrawn or unavailable.

At this point, why even have an English department and composition classes or writing intensive classes. Just give them AI. They can become "prompt engineers." Cool. I'm jumping out my window now.

Please don't come at me with "why are you policing students?" and "they need these tools for the 21st century!" No. Students need to learn how to write and think. AI is not only stopping that--it's regressing their skills.

A massive mindfuck to work in an English department where colleagues are hosting "How to Use AI" workshops while me and others are spending our OWN $$$ on detection programs like Pangram (it works, y'all) and hours of student discipline meetings. We are literally undermining ourselves.

A squirrel is standing inside and peeking over the top rim of a hollowed out pumpkin. The top of the pumpkin can be seen behind. The squirrel is wearing a slouchy black witch hat with orange stripes and holding a squirrel-sized chef knife. The knife is because the squirrel has carved the words ‘MAYBE IT WILL HAPPEN’ in the side of the pumpkin and in the ground in front the word ‘TODAY’ has been spelled with stringy orange pumpkin guts with seeds scattered all around.
