More broadly, these findings are important for understanding the role of protest amid rising polarization and democratic backsliding, as affective divides may, in turn, underpin broader illiberal or even anti-democratic sentiments.

I find little evidence that abortion protests further polarize attitudes toward abortion law itself. However, they increase in-group favoritism among anti-abortion sympathizers, suggesting that protests may shape not only issue attitudes, but also sentiments toward those with different views.

Studying the electoral impacts of the 2019 Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong, I find that the protests mobilized voter turnout and opposition support among citizens who identified as “Hongkongers,” but had the opposite effect among those who identified as “Chinese.”
