It's always worth stating we're a distinct society from the US. Bilingualism, parliamentary government, bunny hugs. Totally different. To be European we gotta get that vacation time up. How is 3+ weeks not a basic NDP talking point. Eby, Kinew you have majorities! (I think Sask has 3 weeks).

Eric Duhaime saying "the most important thing to fight climate change is to eliminate the carbon tax in Quebec" is amazing. It must absolutely rule to play politics on easy mode, saying the dumbest possible thing and still getting 15% because of culture wars.

In my experience in the civil service, entry level staff have Masters degrees, senior management have a bachelors, and middle management have PhD. All the training that got senior management to that position has been privatized.

With Mike Layton entering the race in Uni-Rose, I'm once again on my bullshit about municipal political parties. Engaged voters should get a progressive primary, and median voters should be told which way to vote by the colour of the sign. Relying on name recognition is a terrible system!

Regarding the bike lane appeal in Ontario, it should serve as a reminder to Canadian progressives that the court is not really an avenue of progress in this country. And it's not municipalities or school boards. You gotta win provincial governments.

As is frequently the case, landlords and speculators tell on themselves! They hate when cities allow building, because they know all the power they have comes from scarcity. A city that builds is a city for tenants, not for landlords.

The Neptis Foundation released their Missing Middle Study (from @conradspeckert.bsky.social and Jack Keays) this summer. They made 9 recommended building code changes. When you add them all up it makes a pretty impressive difference to the cost of 3 and 4 storey plexes and apartment buildings.

Matt Elliott: Gord Perks left Toronto council with a bang. Why won’t his long-serving colleagues ever leave?
With Toronto councillors serving for decades and Doug Ford blocking key reforms, term limits may be the only way to get new voices at city hall.

This is bad, but it could lead to staff saying the solution is market pricing for permits in high demand zones, or more aggressive costs for residents with onsite parking. Doubtful, but maybe - if the report comes out in Q2 2027 staff have more leeway for unpopular recommendations.

Been thinking about @shawnmicallef.bsky.social's comments re: non-fiction publishing in Canada, and how it mostly doesn't exist. The advances are too small, the market isn't big enough, and there's little support in the way of grants. I think this has a negative effect on the Canadian theatre.

This is generously the opinion of 20% of the country, and while it won't be the anarchists and MLs who kill this project (it'll be tories and Block voters, and liberals managing contracts badly) this is a problem with local representation.

The police need $350,000 for 250m of road security for 2 months. Toronto has 5600km of roads. Applying this logic across the city would cost $47 billion in policing. And as far as road safety goes, the number one danger is cars. Which this stretch doesn't have!
