Etrian Odyssey, for example, really benefits from having it without running into this problem. There’s quite a few situations where a fight can be wrapped up by just ordering a bunch of fast and free attacks, so not having to do that manually every time keeps the pacing from being too slow

There’s a lot of games I know (mostly Atlus) where using the auto battle button whenever you start any encounter will promptly send you to a game over screen. It’s less about it being there and more if its capabilities actually includes skipping combat, imo

It’s not on this poll but I specifically want to point out that the original game has some excellent character art too, even if the proportions are off sometimes. I really like the poses male ronin have, and the first alchemist’s death stare is a nice touch. The shading even works at DS resolution!

This *sometimes* works on early 1st-party games for the system, but the vast majority have art designed for 4:3. The one popular comparison I remember is Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger. The morph ball is perfectly spherical at a 1:1 pixel ratio, but the moon graphics in Chrono Trigger are not.

Still thinking about how the original Etrian Odyssey was pretty blatantly critical of the “evil humanoids” trope but just 3 years later they’d do all of that again in III but unironically. I love the series to death but none of the sequels get what made the original *really* special

With classes, right? I went with Paladin, Samurai, Druid, and Wizard for my first playthrough and two Samurai, Ranger, and Druid for my second. You can also do a bit of dual classing before unlocking prestige classes, but you MUST follow equip restrictions for both classes to have your full kit.

Physical attacks suck by the midgame due to the massive amount of enemies per encounter. Ideally most members should be part mage because that spell list is just so effective at dealing with large groups. There’s also only 6 prestige classes, and 3 of them are part thief when you only need one thief

As someone with ~140 hours so far on the 3DS title, a lot of the appeal past the 30 hour mark is 100% completion and your miis doing in-character things like doing a slide puzzle with Professor Layton or your parents getting a divorce
