@delta @adbenitez I perfectly know the implications of Telegram's tech and of course you didn't say anything wrong. I am saying something different: mastodon.social/@alxlg/115351730862… There is a spectrum of compromises and you just choose a different point than Telegram's. But […]

@adbenitez Whatsapp became that popular in the SMS era and later added e2ee that doesn't make sense in a proprietary app especially when you have Google/Apple cloud backup enabled. Whasapp still provide poor non-mobile UX. Telegram is FOSS and has reproducible builds. Its calls are always e2ee […]

@adbenitez @delta And let's admit Telegram is not the reason things like Matrix, Delta, XMPP are not more popular. It's just that it is nearly impossible to make them as popular as Telegram because of what people are today. Durov just sent a valuable message to 1+ billion of people today and […]

@Aatube@kbin.melroy.org Internal dynamics doesn't matter: there's always a spending threshold beyond which it's possible to bribe enough contributors, and no, I'm not talking about occasional contributors for targeted campaigns. I'm talking about people paid continuously for as many years as it takes to build the necessary reputation. The people that are supposed to spot abuse patterns in your model can be already compromised and I believe they are.

🇪🇺The EU Commission seriously claims: "There is no such thing as #ChatControl.” Their fantasy: A magic, 100% perfect algorithm that only finds CSAM. The reality: To find anything, you must scan everything. Stop the mass surveillance lie! #StopScanningMe
A screenshot of a social media post (a toot) from the European Commission. The account handle is @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu. The post is dated September 10, 2025, at 16:53 and was posted from the Web.

The text of the post reads:

"Hello @ranx!
Let us be clear: under this proposal, there is no general monitoring of online communications. There will be no such thing as “chat control”.

Only material that is clearly child sexual abuse will be searched for and can be detected.

Detection orders can only be issued by judicial or independent administrative authorities at the end of a thorough process to assess necessity and proportionality, balancing all the fundamental rights at stake."

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
Panels one and two:
Two white mice make their way through a maze.

Panel three:
Having completed the maze, the two mice are rewarded with some fruit. Two scientists watch them. One says:
“Poor little things: all that thought and effort just to earn themselves a little treat.”

The second scientist looks at a clock and says: “Coffee time!”

Panels four and five:
The two scientists make their way through a maze of corridors to a door marked “Canteen”

Panel six:
The scientists look at the food on offer. One says: “Ooh, Donuts!”

The Joy of Linux Theming in the Age of Bootable Containers
Having spent a couple of decades in the Linux world, I have always had an interest in Linux desktop environments and how they are themed. I would often come across a post on /r/unixporn that inspired me to try to customize the look and feel of my desktop environment. So I would install Xfce, LXQt or Sway and try to recreate components that I like from other users or create my own. I would end up installing different kinds of panels, plugins, docks and launchers as well as random themes, fonts and sounds.
