After a week's PTO, it can feel a little like you're playing a version of Kim's Game, looking around to see if anyone's new, or if anyone's missing, since the last time you were in the office.

A plant pot full of light purple pansies. Pansies always look like they have a face, but these look particularly like Minecraft creepers.

When you have a wooden door that rubs against the door frame, you can certainly fix it by shaving down that part of the door... but you can also fix it by screwing the hinges in more firmly, or by bending the hinges just a little bit. Be the person who can recognise the right fix.

I remember developing my own two-channel 'music' program for the ZX Spectrum. I can't find it on my tapes, so it's probably on a Microdrive somewhere, waiting for me to get around to refurbishing them. Never did publish it, or understand why it worked.

I remember learning that you should never pipe the output of wget or curl into shell, but now I see people willy-nilly taking the output of an AI and building whole apps from them, assuming it's not going to include some random malice from its training data.

I keep seeing adverts for a new action movie. As far as I can tell, its chief interesting point is that people run around with guns, and shoot them from time to time. This is, I guess, how you sell a movie to America. Or, at least, to some specific portion of America.

We spend waaay too much time as an industry making software more complex, without making it more useful. Sometimes even making it less useful. Complexity is the enemy, not the goal. You should accept complexity into your systems only when it delivers something else of great value.

Now that Chris Langham's dead and can't profit from it any more, can we see some repeats of some of the (ensemble) comedy roles his presence has presumably kept off the air for the last several decades? The Sunday Supplement, People Like Us, Not the 9 O'Clock News, etc.

AI is better at following documentation than it is at implementing functionality that requires testing and verification. But everyone fired the people who produce accurate documentation, so the documentation's not in line with reality. This is one reason why AI-produced software fails mysteriously.

How do I get to the ferry terminal? 1. Get on the ferry 2. Turn around at Vashon Island 3. Get back on the ferry
A Google Maps screenshot, showing it will take forty minutes to go from the ferry line to the ferry terminal, because it expects you to get on the ferry, go out and back, to get to the terminal.

If there's one thing I know about juggling balls, it's that these are totally inappropriate. Balance is eccentric, they're too heavy, and large enough that you can't hold two in one hand, let alone three. Also, when dropped or they collide with their brethren, they tend to chip and get sharp edges.
Sponsored advert, title "Best Juggling Ball Reviews - 5 Juggling Balls - 5 Juggling Balls of 2025", with a photo of a hand releasing a wood (from lawn bowls) onto grass.

I keep thinking about how often the mass layoffs in media, government and big companies, especially women and people of color, will lead to poorer outcomes for years because the people who would point out potential problems or blind spots were deemed non-essential, a "bad fit", and/or too expensive.

I love this video, for many reasons, but just want to highlight that it shows how someone implemented a security system they couldn't think their way around, someone else came and poked it to show how easy it is to break, and now the defenders are going to have to do a ton of work to try and fix it.
