Ponytail Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is in the area burned during some of the fires several years ago. The green heron in tonight's 9 o'clock photo apparently thinks it's a roadrunner. 20 Sept 2026, Salmon Creek Park, Vancouver, Washington

Bottom 1/3 of the photo is marsh water, with a shoreline running across the middle of the entire photo. Most of the vegetation is fairly dense, but between the shore and the dense grass at this location is an open space. A bird with fairly long yellow legs, yellow beak, green tuft at the top of the head, rusty red neck and upper body, and grayish-green back is running along the edge of the shore.

Red-breasted mergansers on the tidal mudflats of Tillamook Bay for tonight's 9 o'clock photo. Diving birds are generally awkward on land, and the mergansers are no exception. For that reason, it's not often to see them resting on a mudflat like this, but here they are. 29 April 2017

Three duck shaped birds are standing on the shore of a beach. In place of the stereotypical duck bill, they instead have long, pointed bills about as long as their heads. The two birds on the left and right are males, and they have dark green heads, white neck stripes, red bodies immediately below the neck stripe, white sides, and dark backs. The female at the center is a mottled brown collar with two white spots on her wing.
