Richard Gray’s HC Register widened access & raised standards. Glenda Bateman’s founding of the ALS 35 years ago gave lipspeakers a professional voice.Today, lipspeakers are recognised across public services, workplaces & the arts & are listed on @NRCPD our journey continues #SpokenWordsMadeVisible

Turning point for lipspeaking! Public awareness, the DDA, BBC’s See Hear, plus many others brought access into everyday life. In 1992 a Commission of Enquiry recognised that lipspeaking training & examinations needed developing alongside sign language interpreting a step towards professionalisation!

Charles Mardell (deaf - 22 years as Hearing Concern’s Secretary-General) could easily follow Glenda Bateman’s lipspeaking & championed its development. Glenda went on to found the Association of Lipspeakers (ALS). By the 1960s, demand led to formal training, incl. Gwen Cairns’ Burton Manor courses.

Lipspeaking wasn't just born in clubs. In 1949 Oxford’s ENT dept. introduced lipreading classes, thanks to Gavin & Felicity Livingstone & hearing therapist Kathleen Jagger. From club competitions came regional/national contests. Lipreading teachers, many also lipspeakers, were there from the start!

The Lipspeaking story continued - ... Word spread about the success of lipspeaking. Regional rallies brought lipspeaking to the attention of hard of hearing clubs & BATOD. They saw it in action, took the idea home. From those early beginnings, lipspeaking began to blossom. 🌱 #SpokenWordsMadeVisible

... Over 70 yrs ago, In 1948, a new communication skill emerged in Darlington. Bill Snowden and Muriel Shepherd developed lipspeaking as a “platform skill” to ensure everyone could take part in local hard of hearing club meetings. This laid the foundations for lipspeaking in England!

The life of a Lipspeaker. We watch, we listen, we catch every word, making sure every voice can be seen and heard. Quietly there, making things clear, turning spoken words into access, not fear. Yes it's Bank Holiday w/e. We're still on duty... lipspeakers love their work! #SpokenWordsMadeVisible

Lipspeaker feedback: Continuity matters. The patient said having the same lipspeaker regularly offered more than familiarity. It reduced anxiety & gave them greater confidence during appointments. It isn't just about access. Continuity can support wellbeing & mental health too #MentalWellBeing

Empower Yourself: Changing Mindsets about Hearing Loss
The World Health Organization (WHO) named March 3rd World Hearing Day, aiming to raise awareness about hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care globally. This year's theme is "Changing Mindsets: empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all." It is a powerful theme because it puts the person with hearing loss in the driver's seat, acknowledging that the attitudes we hold about our hearing loss and the actions we take to advocate for ourselves are key to how well we live with it.
