Ursula K. Le Guin on the true pain of being a writer
Screenshot of a single question and answer from interview in the Times Literary Supplement with Ursula K. Le Guin. Here is the quote:

If you could make a change to anything you’ve written over the years, what would it be?

In The Dispossessed, I would mention the communal pickle barrels at street corners in the big towns, restocked by whoever in the community has made or kept more pickles than they need. I knew about the free pickles all along, but never could fit them into the book.

My husband was looking for a new book to read, and it turns out he had never read ANY Austen. Not even in high school! Wild. He’s starting this morning with Pride and Prejudice.

“Dead” Ned Johnson turns out to be very much alive. It took him weeks to convince the system he was breathing and to start clawing his benefits back.

Happy International Women's Day from Ada Limon
HOW TO TRIUMPH LIKE A GIRL

I like the lady horses best,
how they make it all look easy,
like running 40 miles per hour
is as fun as taking a nap, or grass.
I like their lady horse swagger,
after winning. Ears up, girls, ears up!
But mainly, let's be honest, I like
that they're ladies. As if this big
dangerous animal is also a part of me,
that somewhere inside the delicate
skin of my body, there pumps
an 8-pound female horse heart,.
giant with power, heavy with blood.
Don't you want to believe it?
Don't you want to lift my shirt and see
the huge beating genius machine
that thinks, no, it knows,
it's going to come in first.

Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality
[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

Curious whether “The Cuyahoga Panopticon” referenced in Horrorstör was a real historical prison or not, I Googled the phrase. The AI overview seems confident that it’s real…based on the details in the novel and interviews with the author about the inspiration for his fictional prison. 🤦‍♀️
