The entire thread is great, but this part deserves even more attention. Because the underlying threat of a pleasant situation turning uncomfortable turning directly creepy is that it is not clear cut when it happens. Constantly trying to prevent something at the exact right moment is exhausting.

Doing the literature review for my upcoming PhD halftime, and yet again facing the hopeless task of making sure that the articles I include haven’t got unreported conflicts of interest. Tobacco companies are the experts of shady influencing techniques and it shows. Or, more accurately, it doesn’t.

New analysis from @propublica.org: Ectopic Pregnancy Deaths Have Nearly Doubled. It’s Worse in States With Abortion Bans. www.propublica.org/article/ecto...

A chart showing the rate of deaths after an ectopic pregnancy, comparing states that banned abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 with those that did not. At the start of the chart, in 2014, the rate is higher in states with abortion bans, but the rates in the two groups of states are not far apart. The rate increases in both groups of states, but the climb is much steeper in states that banned abortion.

there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.

Randomly remembered that the Russian exchange student we had when I was ~17 answered every question with “yes, no, yes”. Bless her heart, she probably just wanted to be polite and avoid “wrong” answers, but god how confusing it was to try figure out what she wanted to eat/do/see.
