"The rivalry is calmer. The stakes are lower. The results fall short and it's a sad state of a fierce rivalry that once defined the sport." No, it's a sign of Manfred's enshittification of the sport, especially the postseason. sports.yahoo.com/articles/red...

The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is in a sad state
The Red Sox and Yankees met in the postseason in consecutive years in the Wild Card round – both won by New York. The clubs had not met in consecutive postseasons since their pair of classics in the 2...

It's already illegal. Congress banned it near-unanimously in 2022. That law allows the ban to be lifted only if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. He's simply breaking the law that's already on the books.

Quick reminder to slow down enough today to enjoy the details of life that we sometimes take for granted: the taste of your food/drink, how the air smells, what sounds you can hear, the textures of things like the wind or a fuzzy blanket. Go discover what you usually ignore.

Sorry, I deleted the post, as I wanted to put in a link. Yeah. I fell down a rabbit hole. I knew about Brendan's voyage, by there's nothing like Hy-Brasil in the Atlantic. Then I stumbled onto an article about the possibility of Irish settlement on the Gaspe peninsula near Pabos. Pure catnip! :)

Me: I'm going to put on my shoes and go for a walk. Me (thirty minutes later): Wow, I never knew about "Greater Ireland" and the Irish colonization of the St. Lawrence Valley in the 8th century in place the Icelandic sagas refer to as Hvitramannaland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_I...

Wow. The blunt truths are SUCH a relief to hear. As horrible as it all is, it’s like I can finally catch my breath, just by hearing a politician bluntly say them out loud.

Def Leppard, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" -- "Living with a lover with a red iPhone." I was in high school when this song came out. I didn't understand the line then. Apparently the words are "radar phone," whatever that means. I hear it now, and I hear "red iPhone." And I can't unhear it. Red iPhone!

In retrospect, I'm glad I took my grandparents' cookie jar to my sister in December after my mom died, because I feel like he'd have tried to get rid of that, too. It's from the 1940s. It's nothing special, it's not worth more than about twenty bucks, but it's cute and my sister and niece like it.

No, it's a tin firetruck from the early 1920s. A century old, belonged to our grandfather, my mom had me steal it out of my grandmother's house when she (my mom) suspected my grandmother was going to dispose of it. I had to invent a reason to go down into the basement to extract it. No. Just no.

He also wants to throw away a childhood toy of my grandfather's because it's "dangerous." Yes, and it's also the only thing from his childhood we have. Sigh.

I believe if we're talking about Trump's words, it helps Trump. But this may be an exception in that it gets at why he's so hated. He hates so much of America. And he lied us into a war that we'll be stuck in possibly forever by believing Netanyahu's lies about a nuclear program that ended in 2003.

Notice the absence of the traditional olive branch? The olive branch symbolized America prioritizing peace with war as a last resort. It has been part of the Great Seal of the United States since 1782 and was part of the original seal of the Department of Defense.

I should note, I like Hornby's novel a lot more than Cusack's film, and part of Rob (the main character)'s arc in the story is his realization that he's a selfish, conceited, dickhole-ish loser and he needs to grow up to not be that person anymore.

About Dead Poets Society... When I rewatch it, I find myself wondering about Mr. Keating's other classes. Surely, this class is not the only class he teaches. What is the experience another grade level has with him? Where is he grading papers? What studies is he undertaking himself? I wish we knew.

High Fidelity. Note: I was in video game retail, not music retail, but this applies. If you want to stay in business, don't be an ass to your customers. Don't judge their tastes. Don't be a gatekeeper. Every product isn't for everyone, but there's some product that's for someone. Don't be a dick.

Weirdly, I think Leavitt would do a better, more competant job at DOD than Whiskey "No Tab" Pete. Oh, she's no more qualified for the role than he is, and she's just as much a religious nutjob, but I don't think she'd be anywhere near as bloodthirsty. (Yes, I know the article is satire.)

This was with the state of Pennsylvania. All they want is a resume and maybe a questionnaire. No cover letters, no samples, no portfolios. And don't even think about merging the cover letter with the resume. Which is nice, in a way, but with this one I'd have liked to argue transferable skills.

Dark Horse Comics published an artbook of Donato Giancola's Middle-earth work about a decade ago, and it is page after page of sheer gorgeousness. It sits on my shelf next to the Brothers Hildebrandt artbook, and two more disparate visions of MIddle-earth cannot be imagined. :)

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

One reason unemployment numbers can go down is people are no longer counted when they exhaust their unemployment benefits. (Raises hand.) So, people can be out of work for 8, 12, 24 months, even more, and not contribute to the statistics because there's no mechanism to measure them.
