Post mostly about the ways evangelicals appropriate God to justify Tradition and political activism. "It is astonishing the lengths to which a person, or a people, will go in order to avoid a truthful mirror.” ― James Baldwin

I think I can reduce Christianity to a simple rule. It holds true from Genesis to Revelation: God is God and Man is Man; Man shouldn't take what belongs to God. ofc, since time memorial, Man can't help taking what's not his, having what he wants, and justifying it.

New day, Republicans calling for removal of socialists, "mass removal" of desi (I learned that term today) people, and being incensed at an ad that had the effrontery to use a young white male as a type for "welfare queen" I just wonder, do you still deny systemic racism is real? What will it take

I don't know how a person who voted for Zero Tolerance can legitimately call themselves a christian; or why those christians who didn't resist expelling them. It's the evilest spirit I've ever felt. And non-christians are repelled by it. It goes to how we define christian.

It's undeniable that the religion was racialized when whites controlled where and what Blacks could sit or do in Church. But then the last 50 years has seen race religionized as the GOP internalized race and God. There are a hundred things more important rn in faith&politics, but they do this.

The power is not in Trump, nor the Ultra Right; but in the Christian Right and the white moderate who as MLK Jr wrote prefer a negative peace to a positive peace of justice and mercy. They could end maga today if they decided racism violated, offended their values.

If you've ever asked yourself how can these "christians" call themselves christian when they reject what Christ taught? Let me translate Hegseth: 'we will be blessed when our beliefs is Lord' He uses the word "God"; but it means themselves. When they are Lord, they will have power.

One of the big ideas I learned over the last ten years is that inspirational documents come from a need to bring order to lawlessness; and it only works when everyone approaches it with good faith. The group who can leverage their beliefs into the Inspiration enforce an opposing reality.

Since he-who-must-not-be-named is riffing about "morally binding" restrictions on AI development I think it's time to mention that morality is based in human interactions. Whether you should buy a Pickup or a Prius isn't a moral question until you factor in how it affects people. +

such has white christian nationalism broken me that I can't read scripture without turning it around to find the chink they would exploit to undermine it; or white authors without thinking culturally they can't help but present a moderate view. I know its wrong, but positive trust has been lost.

I cringe when I hear someone stumping for voted and quoting Jesus; it's just wrong. Douglass famously contrasted the slaveholding religion as the Christianity of the Land and its opposite as the Christianity of Christ. To love one he said is to hate the other. www.politico.com/news/2026/09...

We are so far beyond where we were in 2016. Back then Republicans openly questioned the possibility he could pivot and be 'presidential'. But you see this wasn't the beginning for the Republicans, they had been excusing bad behavior for decades to remain politically relevant; it was one of many.

Brilliant op-ed: Who goes Nazi? written in 1941 by Dorothy Thompson. I love this kind of writing – which pokes at people's character; who wouldn't go Nazi? Dehumanizing another person must be unnecessary, or an insurmountable shame.

I find myself thinking about this 1941 Harper's magazine article a lot. Point being, good, happy people don't turn into Nazis. Also, @cuny.edu (represent!) students seldom turn into Nazis. But the "scared spectator" and the "spoiled sons" often do. 🗃️ Archive Link below 👇
Kind, good, happy, gentlemanly, secure people never go Nazi. They may be the gentle philosopher whose name is in the Blue Book, or Bill from City College to whom democracy gave a chance to design airplanes—you’ll never make Nazis out of them. But the frustrated and humiliated intellectual, the rich and scared speculator, the spoiled son, the labor tyrant, the fellow who has achieved success by smelling out the wind of success—they would all go Nazi in a crisis.
Believe me, nice people don’t go Nazi. Their race, color, creed, or social condition is not the criterion. It is something in them.
Those who haven’t anything in them to tell them what they like and what they don’t, whether it is breeding, or happiness, or wisdom, or a code, however old-fashioned or however modern, go Nazi. It’s an amusing game. Try it at the next big party you go to.

In the writings of Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois and MLK Jr. there is a broad and deep understanding of what Douglass described as 'the christianity of the Land vs the christianity of Christ' Which follows a God who has brought down rulers from their thrones and lifted up the humble.

I wish Mr. Orwell was right. Maybe theoretically he's correct, but practically speaking, Truth doesn't exist until it's accepted, acted on; so denial blocks it from being real. Logs show Trump made 345 flights to Epstein island...is that true if he can deny it?

It's not really funny but I see a connection. Idrc about you non-christians, you've got your act together and want to do right. It's the white christians who spiritualize everything who need to reify 'good', not 'thoughts and prayers' it. They will say "good" is an attitude and not practice it.

What white evangelicals don't get, because they are the in-group, is that if "christian" isn't defined by Jesus, then it can mean whatever the in-group wants it to mean. Untethered from Jesus, the in-group will grow by being known as a haven for un-christlike values: power, money, sex.

White evangelicals are baptized into a faith which doesn't speak to the poor and marginalized but to the self important. If the Love God and Love Others as yourself is the byword of christianity, their politics is pro-God and anti-Others They can be very generous, provided it's on their conditions+
