Had forgotten that I included "Yay, science!" (exclamation point preserved) in this chapter. Also the term "villainy" which I hear in Gru's voice in my head. Maybe makes it okay that I'm formatting footnotes at 10:30 on a Friday night.

When I wrote in my book proposal to a press that I could have the complete manuscript of my monograph to them within a week, I didn't mean THIS WEEK.

Today's walk to work/looking out the window after getting home.
Photograph of the brick entrance to the Lycée Déodat de Séverac. Graffiti has been added that translates to "The police are beating up children in France" and various cardboard signs have been placed against the wall. Outside the frame of this photo, about half a block away were 50 CRS officers, blocking the sidewalks, checking bags.Photo from an apartment balcony of three-deep wall of CRS in full riot gear walking down the street.

Been trying to solve solvable problems lately. Today, because my basket was full of the rest of my boulangerie and market haul, I found a way for my beautiful fractal crucifer to get home safe and sound. Also, CRS lined up in the cold drizzle on my street, so I shot them long dirty looks.
Photograph of a child seat on the back of a big parked on a French street. In the seat is an up-turned strawberry helmet and cradled in the helmet is a brilliant fuchsia romanesco chou, all buckled in for safety!

The youth protests in France that began over poor learning conditions in schools are now being met by police brutality. This is a clear demonstration (in every sense of that word) of the massive shift in state resources to policing & surveillance rather than public goods like education.

I'm staying safe! My kids were rattled by the mini stampedes and firecrackers on our ride to school. And I definitely got teargassed on the way home, trying to thread between protesters and riot police.

Day 3 of lycée student protests on my street: Have spent the morning with the windows shut tight against tear gas and smoke, slowly working through an interviewer’s questions about my Safe Place for Science fellowship.

Thankfully it was only about 10 minutes of terror/water gushing/dashing around with buckets and towels. And my landlord thought it was all very funny, I think because it ended well with me fixing the washer so he doesn't have to figure out how to replace it from Brazil.

If I owed you an email today, I didn't send it because I spent the morning (a) flooding my apartment and (b) fixing the clothes washer. Accomplishment net zero? (I found the main shutoff valve before the floodwaters made it out of the kitchen to the wood floors)Ph
Photograph of the side of a small French clothes washer with the panel removed. The belt that turns the wheel that turns the drum so that clothes are actually agitated rather than just sitting in soapy water for three hours has been reattached. Other than flooding the laundry room, I'm very proud of myself.

Same with Norwegian institutions. I actually lapped (?) myself, receiving a very belated notification of an appointment within days of applying for a different position. I had completely forgotten I applied for the first one even though I'd been ranked.

Very few things on the internet brought me joy back in 2020 but witnessing this unfold in realtime was by far the most delightful. * some weird context: my family was getting a private tour of our university's milking barn and I bumped into more than one cow because I was staring at my phone

There's lots to love about the public transit in Toulouse but my favorite thing is that each metro car has a padded butt rail to lean on, aloofly. I've never been so cool on a commute. Also, there's unsettling art in the stations!
A photograph of a large (like, 20 feet high) cement mushroom-like tree on the metro platform at Mirail-Univeristé station in Toulouse. On the floor and in the background is grey and white tile and paneling.

But not the actual eggs, those are spread across commissaries all over the country. Where is the efficiency? Running only one temperature-management program? I don’t mean to sound obtuse. I’m genuinely asking.

Today has been a lot of stupid bureaucratic hurdles and webforms requiring resets and nothing just being straightforward and easy. I throw in the towel on productivity and pull out the whole-grain rice mix thingy for an easy dinner base. Only to discover the cooking instructions are in Flemish.

Here’s our viewing spot for the evening. That cloud has six hours to move along.
Photo of a hillside of a tiny Spanish village with stucco homes and tiled roofs. At the crest of the hill is a red brick church. In the sky just beyond it is a single small cloud in an otherwise clear blue sky.

Just moved into furnished apartment owned by a French family away on sabbatical. In what appears to be a junk organizer cubby in an otherwise fastidious kitchen drawer there are: rubber bands secured by twisty ties, six pairs of scissors, ice cream scooper, a usb cable, and some Brazilian coins.
