This story hits on at least 3 of my ongoing 287(g) threads: 1️⃣ small town police chief in VA signs an agreement in May, w/o town council authorization. 2️⃣ taps into the Task Force 287(g) cash cow, earning the agency over $100K from ICE. 3️⃣ town council sides w/ PD against vocal community push back.

the way that cordelia specifically haunts Brothers in Arms....as a testament to the soft political power of parenting...."miles, where is your [spoiler]?"

a civil campaign: what if a traditional historical romance was also responsible for tying up like six different character arcs from a military sf series and decided to do it all in the funniest way possible (it's perfect) (memory is my favorite)

soccer

Soon its night
On a very sunny day
Crikets sing all throgh the night
Changed as we are, it is time
ever changed, bed had come

wild to be living in a world with live-streamed state executions and legal daylight kidnappings, but every time you turn around some loser is saying, hey man, what if art were completely frictionless? what if we killed even the possibility of human connection??

the year is 2030 and i no longer consume anything that isn't personalized to me. every game, every book, every movie extends to the limits of my own imagination and no further. i haven't been surprised in five years. i cry softly, in bewilderment, if i see a word i don't know

listen--the way romance novels about very young people necessarily conflate coming-of-age with falling-in-love--the way these two people have already become themselves, a couple of times--

my husband has been remodeling our bathroom (down to the joists! including tiling and wiring! in between coaching two soccer teams and doing most of the cooking & cleaning!) and it's looking so good u guys
guy in a hoodie standing wearily in the ugliest bathroom you've ever seen. beige linoleum. pink and black tile. the guy is hot btwa gutted room, studs visible. that subfloor was so nasty we tore the whole thing out.a nearly-finished bathroom! new sink, cute tile floor with a star pattern, new tub. the shower walls have board up but no tile

WOW that makes me so disproportionately angry lol. like half of what you're doing as a coach is teaching kids how to learn a new skill, and you yourself are not bothering to learn those very skills??

anyway this is the second time in a week i've heard someone say they chatgpt their coaching for youth sports, and both people should be genuinely embarrassed. if you're asking kids to do what you tell them, i guess i think you should bother to know what you're talking about!

not coincidental that the highly-skilled labor is often exactly the kind of labor that's already systemically undervalued. domestic work (meal planning, emotional labor), admin work (note-taking, delegating, scheduling), some of the trades (home renovation, carpentry, etc)

every time i get suckered in by a "but what about all the useful stuff AI does in my life??" argument the useful stuff is either "something you could google in two seconds" or "highly-skilled labor you don't have and therefore can't fact check"

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

anyway if romance novels are so formulaic how come i just read one where a woman enlists a famous highwayman to get revenge on the puritanical cult that killed her family but the highwayman (who btw can talk to animals) can't play the hero anymore bc he suffers from disabling vertigo

a black blazer i embroidered with some of the flowers from The Everlasting. 10/10 for effort, 7/10 for recognizability black floral dress for Ten Thousand Doors. one thing about me is my books have flowers on them. 8/10a white floral dress for Once and Future Witches. idk maybe 7/10? basic but effectivea white shirt with bluish starlings all over it, for Starling House. extremely literal, not a great color match, 6/10
