You ever write something and there are so many parts you hope people engage with that you can't figure out which ones to quote? I'll do a wee thread on the 3rd, and final, essay from my Red Scares series www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...

It's actually a good thing that previously apolitical normies are finally getting angry and starting to speak out. We need the numbers in the streets and at the polls. If your response to them is "no, fuck you, too late," then you don't actually care about stopping Trump. You're just preening.

If CBC radio has watched the video why can they not describe the facts about how ICE murdered a woman? Instead they quote BOTH Trump and Kristi Noem’s description before saying the state reps “disagree” but they NEVER DESCRIBE THE FACTS. They relate Trump’s lie that she was weaponizing the car.

We all know that ICE is violating human rights in the U.S. But did you know a Canadian company is profiting off ICE? And that this same company has been ramping up its lobbying efforts? Now, in my latest for @thetyee.ca, the government won't tell me if this is a red line for procurement:

Spotify has laid off thousands in recent years, while reportedly paying artists $0.003 per stream. Spotify profits rose 28% in Q3. Its CEO is worth $9.8 billion. It's making money off ICE recruitment ads. Don't you think it's time put a wrap on corporate greed and exploitation?

I agree! I also find it utterly frustrating when fans (& foe!) of AI talk about how "it's evolving so quickly" as though someone pressed a button once & it's been doing its own thing ever since. AI is not sentient or even intelligent. Human beings are pushing the technology to do more, more, more.

Not trying to burst any bubbles; but Spotify is over. They are airing ICE recruitment ads, the CEO has been investing in military/AI tech, they barely pay their artists; sometimes a percentage of a cent per stream, they promote “fake/AI artist” playlists, and there’s major concerns about data use.

Libraries purchase books. When you see a book at the library, it isn’t “free” the library bought it. which in turn means that the community bought it. In other words, library books are not lost sales for authors and publishers; they’re positive sales. Active sales. Those are bought.

“Don’t let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.”
Black text on a yellow background - This is Alice's friend Sandy Ho, posting. Per Alice's wishes, this message is being shared at the time of her passing.
Hi everyone, it looks like I ran out of time. I have so many dreams that I wanted to fulfill and plans to create new stories for you. There are a few in progress that might come to fruition in a few years if things work out. I did not ever imagine I would live to this age and end up a writer, editor, activist, and more. As a kid riddled with insecurity and internalized ableism, I could not see a path forward. It was thanks to friendships and some great teachers who believed in me that I was able to fight my way out of miserable situations into a place where I finally felt comfortable in my skin.
We need more stories about us and our culture.
You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment. Our wisdom is incisive and unflinching. I'm honored to be your ancestor and believe disabled oracles like us will light the way to the future. Don't let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.

Alice Wong taught us that disabled people don’t just leave memories behind—they leave infrastructure. Lineages of care. Methods of collectivity, survival. She named the connective tissue that holds our communities together, even across death, even across the losses that come too fast and too often.

This is also an indication of how badly we need trauma informed care. It's like we've created widespread arrested development where people don't have to process their emotions, they can just distract themselves or get a chat bot to confirm their worst ideas. No processing, just delusions.
