The climate crisis needs to be understood as a working condition for students and staff. When I worked as a language assistant in Germany we had Hitzefrei when it got too hot. But how should schools respond to day after day of excessive heat in buildings that are already not fit for purpose.

‘Pull the plug’: protesters resort to direct action against AI firms
Campaign groups report surge in membership after a spate of AI safety alerts and apocalyptic warnings In a bar below Waterloo Bridge, a cell of a fast-growing anti-AI protest movement met last week to plot their latest move: disrupting a tech industry dinner being addressed by a senior executive from the chip maker Nvidia. Emma, a 28-year-old bartender, had never before taken direct action and was the most nervous of the four plotters from Pull The Plug, one of a growing number of AI-focused campaign groups around the world. ‘We just want to be listened to’: student protests shut schools across France
Lack of investment, overcrowded classrooms, crumbling buildings and poor teacher pay among reasons for protests by school students * Europe live – latest updates As dozens of school pupils sat on top of a pile of wheelie bins blocking a high school entrance in north-eastern Paris, Sophia, 17, was on the frontline of the barricade, when she would normally have been attending Spanish class. “We hope this grows into a massive youth protest movement,” said the final year baccalaureate student at Paris’s Lycée Voltaire, who did not want her real name published. She was on her second day of blocking the school entrance along with hundreds of others, ensuring all lessons were cancelled. “We just want to be listened to by the government. We’d rather stand here doing this than have to learn in poor conditions. It’s the only way to make ourselves heard.” Continue reading...

The US government is threatening to end relations with Ghent University over their suspension of Cofnas, in case you needed more confirmation of what’s happening in this country
U.S. Ambassador to Belgiu... & €
@USAmbToBelgium

The United States Mission to Belgium condemns, in the strongest terms, Ghent University's retaliation against an American scholar following his accurate whistleblower reporting on academic fraud.
The United States government regularly funds and supports research, academic exchanges, and other engagements with overseas universities. Dishonest, corrupt institutions that engage in, or reward, scapegoating mob behavior are not desirable partners for us. This is particularly true where the purpose and effect of the scapegoating is to punish accurate journalism unearthing academic dishonesty. We are therefore reviewing any relationships we have with Ghent University.
Bad-faith idealogues will try to make this a referendum on the content of Cofnas's scholarship - or polemical distortions of it.
That's wrong. Free speech means that controversial views are protected. And Conas'sBad-faith idealogues will try to make this a referendum on the content of Cofnas's scholarship - or polemical distortions of it.
That's wrong. Free speech means that controversial views are protected. And Conas's views were known to Ghent University when he was hired.
The ultimate purpose of freedom of speech is to overturn lies, fraud, and false ideologies. This is precisely what Cofnas was doing, and precisely the reason his home institution wants to silence him.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
