Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Big migrant care workers rally outside Labour conference on Monday around lunchtime. Migrant care workers are tied to their employers which makes them modern bonded exploitated labour. Plus Labour govt arbitrarily extending ILR qualifying period from 5 to 15 years (unless you're a billonaire). 010

Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Truth is, poll tax failed when they started to prosecute pensioners - so the lesson is there... 120
Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 13/09/2026You wouldn't. Which would have the upside of older people downsizing to avoid it. But it would be massively, and I mean hugely unpopular 220
Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Yeh, I just think although IHT is unpopular - though I have no idea why - property tax would be even more unpopular, politically. 330
Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 13/09/2026A property tax would be much worse for those that complain about IHT. IHT is paid when you die and taxes unearned wealth being passed on. A property tax would hit older people in high value properties on a pension. Not sure evicting pensioners is a great alternative to inherited wealth tax tbh. 3154

Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Yes. And we looked into that. To do it cost way more and didn’t cover everything like a marriage contract. All that work and you don’t even cover yourself. Just get over it and get married. It’s only a contract unless you make more of it. 000
Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I was happy to do it - as I am happy to write a will. If people don't want to make things legal - like wills, power of attorney, marriage etc. that's fine. But you can't expect to be legally protected without a legal contract. It would be wrong if the state assumed a contract where there isn't one. 040
Alison Charlton @alicharlo.bsky.social · 07/09/2026My partner and I got married because it is the cheapest way to make sure both of us are protected legally in the event of something happening.
