Been off the socials and working hard to get papers out, and thrilled to see this out finally as a preprint at Nature HSS (and not desk-rejected) for a special issue on youth activism. Crazy, I've been working on this project for eight years since I (re)started my academic journey back in 2018!!

Excited to share that Nature has released a preprint of my work with @jilllaufer.bsky.social on evaluating the impacts of the March for Our Lives gun control advocacy movement on youth participation in the 2018 midterms (manuscript still under review). Read here: doi.org/10.21203/rs....

This seems like a good time to announce two pieces of news: 1) I’ll be presenting my work on silicon sampling for conjoints tomorrow @experimentsapsa.bsky.social 2) I’ll be joining @lilymasonphd.bsky.social @snfagora.bsky.social for a postdoc starting this fall. Thanks to everyone for the support!

I decided to do something new for my final Research Methods for Public Policy class of the quarter. Many of my students are considering political work or grad school, so I walked them through pros and cons of each path based on my own experiences in 3 very different careers.
screenshot of a slide titled “Questions to Ask Yourself” that lists considerations students should bear in mind when choosing between government work, political campaigns, and graduate school.Screenshot of a slide titled “Graduate School versus Government versus Campaigns: Which Path Might Be Right For You?” and outline of pros and cons of each path based on personal experience

Love that this article keeps popping up in my feed. It's motivating to finish the final stretch of the study with @alicemalmberg.bsky.social, where we show significantly positive effects of the @marchforourlives.bsky.social Road to Change yearlong protest in 2018 and GOTV for youth. #SPSA

That’s a wrap on my first quarter as an instructor of record for methods, one of the hardest but most rewarding things I’ve done in my PhD. I’m so proud of my 43 undergraduates who conducted original, policy-oriented research projects and presented today to CA policy leaders and community members.

Can LLM-based 'silicon samples' accurately reflect human decisionmaking in conjoint tasks? The short answer is "not really" -- but there's more to the story. I'll be presenting my paper on synthetic sampling in conjoint experiments tomorrow at 10! #APSA2025

UNC is secretly recording classes without informing professors and using the footage in formal reviews of their performance. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
The associate dean, Christian T. Lundblad, told Chavis that the review had begun prior to April 22—using a camera in Chavis’s classroom.

“We recorded and reviewed several of your class sessions on April 8th, 10th, 15th and 17th using the existing Panopto camera in the classroom,” Lundblad wrote. (The company says its name derives from panoptic, defined by Merriam-Webster as “being or presenting a comprehensive or panoramic view,” though others have noted its ominous similarity to a panopticon, an 18th-century design for a prison where guards could constantly surveil the inmates.)

Quick litmus test to check if you drink too much caffeine: mention to coworkers that you’ve heard of a new drink called a “Black Widow” (4 shots of espresso in a cup of black coffee). If they all yell “NO!” at the same time, you may have a problem.

I’ve really resonated with the Mary Oliver poem “The Journey” throughout grad school. When I advanced to candidacy last week my amazing friend @dantecade.bsky.social had the opening line engraved on a letter opener. “One day you finally knew what you had to do and began.”

A lot of the current POTUS race narrative is likely being driven by low propensity voters. If you shift from "hasn't voted in last 3 elections" to "has voted in all 3 of last elections" it goes from Trump 44 Biden 26 to Trump 39 Biden 50 abcnews.go.com/538/vote-bac...

Today I became a PhD candidate (!) My top takeaway from the past 3 years is to know yourself. Know your motivations. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Most importantly, know what you are capable of. Know you get to define that for yourself as long as you put in the work and never give up.

Serious question - what do people with 8GB RAM computers (especially Macs) do when analyzing big data sets/using machine learning methods? Do y’all just invest in a more powerful computer? Been in the Apple ecosystem forever but a higher RAM Mac is way out of budget as a grad student. Polisky
