Russell Street is residential, however, it crosses College Avenue, a commercial street, so the Halloween event also brings a lot of business to the area.

I think the neighborhood association does it, the city also takes part and provides some funding - there's a fire station at one end of the street, and the firefighters bring out the truck for the kids to see. Thousands of people show up, including from out of town. berkeleyca.gov/sites/defaul...

Berkeley does a Halloween street closure for Russell Street between College and Claremont, and it's amazing.

That's still how I plan trips in the rare times I drive. I open up a satellite map and draw a paper map showing the cross street before the turns, landmarks like bridges and railroad crossings, etc - and maybe a side trip or two if I notice there's a place I want to go that's along the way.

From the latest news, it looks like political candidates, and now parties as well, get to pay lower rates than regular ads. So it might not actually make the TV station much. apnews.com/article/supr... More curious if businesses see a drop in sales due to fewer product ads.

I used to commute to work Monday-Friday, and after a week of commuting, would rarely want to go back into the city, or anywhere far for that matter, on weekends. Now I commute Tuesday-Thursday, but am on transit Saturday and Sunday going to other places.

Might be a Bay Area wide thing, earlier this year I was on a westbound 1-California stuck behind a car that broke down just past Kearny, blocking the only lane. A few of us got off and pushed it over to a parking spot. Good thing they broke down there and not the next block, which is much steeper!

The carpool lane fines really ought to go up for repeat offenders, especially since on Bay Area freeways there's a legal way to pay a toll to use the carpool lane.

That's what I've heard from others also. I don't have Kaiser but I'm not happy with other systems either, 2/3 of the doctors I've had have run into issues with insurance that I had to spend a lot of time to deal with. Would much prefer a single-payer system where I didn't have to deal with billing.

It can be - single pane windows don't keep heat in, and on the flip side, won't keep the heat of a fire outside from getting in either. The building code restricts window sizes for windows near a property line, unless they use special fire-resistant glass and frames

Possibly uninsurable also due to the location and walls made of either wood or what looks like single pane glass

The different circumstances aren't mentioned in the article (as they are obvious to this newspaper's readers), one of them is a greater percentage of today's immigrants are high income, the other is that there's more established communities, more anti-discrimination laws, and other support now.

Yes, that was the part of the article that really caught my attention! It mentioned two factors: 1. Immigrants lean more towards Democrats over the years after experiencing racism, or from learning more about each party. 2. The circumstances that people immigrated under have changed.
