iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

You just described my entire strategy. 😜

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

So be wary of others, yes. What Ben said there is correct. But far more important than that, be wary of yourself. Be wary of what could curdle your better sense. Be wary of how your own ambitions can lead you down dark alleys. And be the version of yourself that you both like best and admire most.

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

BTW, I’ve written this whole thread with no single person in mind. Because I’m describing a systemic phenomenon, not any one journey. The system WANTS us selfish. Because then we’re malleable. Our goals both align with those in power as well as it makes us vulnerable to those in power.

190

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Read Ben’s thread. Understand the idealism and even the pragmatism behind what he’s saying. And understand that there’s always a pressure present to become the opposite, to surrender the trust of others. And that those who’ve done just that would give anything to remain the heroes of their stories.

180

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

It’s so easy, psychologically, to treat the rules different between yourself and everyone else. We get so mad at others when they do it. Because they’re not us! We just see them making a selfish choice. But all choices comes out of pressure. And we feel our own pressure, as if no one else ever has.

180

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

They’re “doing what they gotta do”. They’re following their dreams. They’re playing the game. If you think you’re immune from this automatically, because you’re good and they’re bad, you’re in the perfect position to end up just like them. Because they were you once. And then just one choice came.

180

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Every single person that Ben is describing here, at least once upon a time and potentially up to this very moment? They don’t see themselves as bad people. Moreover, they don’t see themselves as toxic/selfish/any other obviously-unwanted label. They just see themselves as actors. Simple as that.

190

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

Once more, Ben brings significant wisdom, and I advise reading the whole thread. I just wanna add one thing. Instead of turning these important albeit alarming observations about the trajectory of the industry into a reason to call others out, do this instead: Watch out that YOU don’t become this.

This is inhumane and unacceptable. And how were these workers thanked for enduring these conditions? Many were laid off. This is why we're organizing. A better industry is both possible and must come to pass if our artform and dignity are to survive.

The fact that this was the first thing that popped in my head about Curry is a testament to the greatness that he earned, that he held, and that he clearly distributed to others. This is what we must always strive to be, advocates for each other. I’m making myself tear up just typing this.

So, imagine you’re Rob. You’re an accomplished VA, sure, but you’re getting beaten down by the client. You’re afraid to speak up, lest their nitpicking be a prelude to a firing. And your co-star, a MUCH bigger name than you, not only validates your experience but says, “Go stand up to them!”

Alex Weitzman @alexweitzman.bsky.social · 26/08/2026

Rob Paulsen recalled this moment to AV Club during his Random Roles interview some years ago. He was playing Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask to Tim Curry’s Pretorius. And the studio was driving Rob bonkers with comparisons to Jim Carrey. Demanding he be “more like Jim”. Nitpicking every delivery.

I wanna highlight one of the first things I thought of when I heard that Tim passed away. It’s not his prodigious career or his incredible talent, it was this story. Of him encouraging a fellow actor to stand up for himself. See below for the screenshot, but I’ll recount the tale in a thread. 🧵

I’m still waiting for Squeenix and Disney to realize the breadth of opportunity they have in Disney’s old 1960s/70s/80s live-action family movies. I want a world based on The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, or a keyblade made out of flubber. No joke, a stage based on Flight of the Navigator would KILL.
