To bring this back to the book, it resonates so deeply with my experience that I am very literally brought to tears by scenes like this - the absolute heartbreak of someone hating themself for never seeming to be enough.

AL-X (Alex Steacy) @alexsteacy.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

I have a lot to say about this experience, but I may need to collate a bit more formally because it is highly personal and important.

I had struggled bitterly with tasks most find trivial, and come to what I believed was the logical conclusion: I was stupid, and I was lazy. Having it revealed that I had been living with the parking brake on was difficult. I think I still grapple with it, and with unlearning that self hatred.

I got an official diagnosis in 2020, and it was a complex experience for me. Many online talk about their own diagnoses with happiness or relief, like the explanation was a real lightbulb moment for them. It wasn't like that for me. I felt so, so angry - like I had been cheated for untold decades.

AL-X (Alex Steacy) @alexsteacy.bsky.social · 05/10/2026

I suppose this is as good an opportunity as any to talk about my own experience. It was probably obvious to some, but I have never been especially "out" as someone with ADHD and there's reasons for that.

Got my copy of @adhd-alien.bsky.social 's book! I'm going to have to pace myself because some of this is so beautifully heartbreaking. Astounding work.

This comes with profuse apologies to everyone who is awaiting commission work. Until I can get something usable cobbled together I am absolutely dead in the water where digital art is concerned. I will resume as soon as possible.

My computer wouldn't boot when I came back from short vacation, and we are reaching the dire end of the troubleshooting path. If you can spare a few bucks it will lessen the sting. Thanks all. ko-fi.com/alexsteacy/g...

There’s always going to be someone better, faster, and more skilled than I. But no one is going to have the same artistic voice as mine. Creating isn’t a competition, it’s a form of communication and connection. It’s a vulnerable thing, but it’s beautiful that way.

The really fun part about these was because they were incandescent, the only way to control the intensity was to connect them all through a dimmer rack, a wheeled case that I believe was solid copper on the inside and as such weighed 17 tons.

Parkans, par cans or just pars as I recall are the now highly obsolete, tungsten filament3d, cheap stamped metal floodlights / fire hazard generators that you may still see near the ceiling of churches and comedy clubs.

I worked show tech in Toronto for around 7 years and then a few more when I came back to BC. I should really try and recall my times there, maybe with some drawings.

I don't know if this would actually do anything exciting but it's amusing to think someone used a torch to strategically ruin the temper on this tool so that it would fail under high torque.
