In specific modern terms it's a requel. A legacy sequel (not a reboot or remake, same continuity) that heavily follows the structure of the original film (Star Wars 1977) while featuring legacy supporting cast + new lead cast. But in normal terms? Sequel. It is the first film of the SEQUEL trilogy.
