Still believe that is just exactly what any (decent) translator does with any creative text since forever. More and more I see people say "it's ONLY used for translation" when it comes to genAI in games. As if the act of writing into another language is not worth respecting. As if people in other countries (both gamers and workers) don't matter at all. Translation IS writing. Translation IS art.

El no estar dispuesto a traducir a otros idiomas porque pretendes revisar tu mismo las traducciones no sólo demuestra que no entiendes como debería funcionar la localización de un videojuego, sino que queda pretencioso y engreído.

Tanto cuando tienes idea del idioma como cuando no tienes ni pajolera idea, lo que tienes que hacer es lo que hace todo el mundo: buscar a un profesional o a un equipo con el que creas que vas a estar a gusto, en base a otros títulos con los que ya hayan trabajado anteriormente, por ejemplo.

La cuestión es que aunque tengas idea del idioma sigues sin estar capacitado para traducir o revisar nada. Para ello hace falta ser un profesional de la traducción, con formación y experiencia, además de nativo del idioma meta, para poder confirmar si el texto de verdad suena natural y encaja bien.

I'm sorry toby but your take on translation is either ignorant, arrogant, or even both. It seems to me you have no idea how localization works, professional translators are professionals for a reason. Their job is to ensure the translation matches the original author's vision.

You don't want to pay a translation team because you wouldn't be able to guide them since you don't know the language. But you'd rather have fans do the translations themselves, without your supervision, leaving everyone with a version that lacks “your vision of the work.” Okay.

primarily writing english language notes on his intent for specific lines, his jp knowledge use in the notes seems to be looking up matches for words and references, and the actual work of translation and localisation was done by... 8-4, led by keiko fukuichi

I get a lot of emails to me professing that the characters in this game "felt like r eal people"
to them. when the game's translated, the biggest thing is that it still needs to be able t o
achieve thi s . A lot of the char acters DO say absolutely cartoony, anime-y, game-y things ... but
then they' 11 turn around and say something extremel y casual, Kind of like someone you knew in
real life would say . I believe it's this contrast that makes people care. I really don ' t know
how to express it. Just don't worry about making it sound li ke an RPG all the time I guess LOL
undertale j s f ull of wei rd things and jokes. If t here· s a funny line in t he EN version that
doesn't work in the JP version, it's obviously better to change it to something funny rather
than try to make it faithful. I 'd be glad to help with any of these changes if necessar y .

Vulkin, Woshua, etc. Though some work seemingty (ice cap=hyobo)
- "Aaron IS the name of my friend, so don't change that"
- Jerry could be kept "Jerry" or turned into generic name of the annoying kid in your middle school class (like "Takashi" or something)
- "Snowdrake" IS a pun on drake (dragon) and snowflake, if it helps to localise a pun you can also refer to it as a bird
• "Astigmatism" =literally 非点収差 in JP i guess, it could be good to change it to katakana and change a letter to make it into a pun?
• "Lemon Bread"= Reference to "MELON BREAD" from Gunstar Heroes (and other Treasure games). I've looked and every time It appears in
a JP Treasure game it's referred 10 as MELON PAN" in romaji, so might just want to localize it as "LEMON PAN" in romaji as well.
A thing to think about with all the dog puns, do JP people know the word "dog" or should we change all of them to inu puns? Either way is
fine, just as long as 1 word is used consistently

Dogeresse = female version of "doge" doesn't translate well...

Fire Elemental" from Dungeons and Dragons. "Dog Elemental and ·Greater Dog Elemental" could be potentially funny ways to localize these.
Endogeny = But basically anything "cell" or biology/sci fi related would be good

Uncommon Help
Because the entertai nment localization industry relies so heavily on agencies,
middlemen, paperwork, and tigh t deadlines, creators and localizers are often
separated by a wall of bureaucracy. This separation makes it difficult for both
sides to communicate w ith each other. And even when bureaucracy isn't an
issue, some creators simply don't care to be involved in the localization process.
Either way, it's rare to see a creator actively participate in a localization project.
In Underta/e's case, Toby was directly involved with the English-to-Japanese
localization process from the very start. He provided 8-4 with all of his
development files and copious translation notes ahead of time. He remained
in constant contact with the team via e-mail, answered question after question,
asked question after question, and even met with the localization team in
Japan more than once.

As the localization neared completion, Toby also brought in outside help to
critique key parts of the localization and explain their Japanese nuances to him.
Toby then sent these critiques to 8-4 to improve the final script before release.
In short, although he's understandably not listed as a member of the
localization staff, Toby undeniably played a major part in Underta/e's Japanese
localization.
On a side note, sometime near t he localization's release, Toby mentioned
to me that he'd met with the translator at least once before and t hat
they'd discussed localization concerns in person. He later told me that he
was genu ine ly impressed with her work a nd that she reall y "got" his style.

3. actually reading legends of localization undertale revealed that toby wanted to translate undertale into japanese specifically as early as 2015, before he knew the language, and that the translation was completed /as he was beginning to learn the language/. toby's contribution was
