I'm excited to vote for a mayor this month who actually uses transit; who immerses himself in the life of this city and experiences Ottawa in the way that the rest of us do.

Much has been made of the OpenAI chatbots' dialog during the Hugging Face incident. No wonder: it reads like a rejected script for a reboot of the movie "Hackers."

You've probably seen the word #Landback somewhere and instantly had some feelings. It sounds blunt, which is part of why a lot of people tend to have an instant reaction or jump to some very problematic misconceptions about what it means. So, let's talk Landback, from my POV and work.

After spending 6 months in Aotearoa New Zealand - where even the smallest towns have well-maintained public toilets, and cities have them all over, and some of them are genuine works of art - I see no reason why we can't meet this basic need for the people who live here, too.

The murders in Tumbler Ridge are horrifying and heartbreaking. So is the way they're already being weaponized to stir up hate. This is a wound in our society that will only heal if we act with care and keep out the poison.

This is Minneapolis: We’re out to breakfast @ our favorite restaurant, now called Post-Modern Times. They’ve moved to free/donation based so taxes aren’t going to the fed govt during this occupation. Another customer leaves & says goodbye to their friends, “te amo, te amo, chingra la migra!”
Hello,
My name is Dylan. I own Modern Times Cafe in South Minneapolis and have for 15 years. Modern Times is on the corner of 32nd and Chicago Ave; 6 blocks from where George Floyd was murdered, 3 blocks from where Renee Good was executed, and a mere neighborhood away from where Alex Pretti was murdered.
After ICE Agents shot and killed Renee and then Alex, I was at the scene within hours. I witnessed hostile and aggressive armed goons sent by the Federal Government protecting each other from unarmed, outraged citizens. I bore witness to these atrocities and was tear-gassed, smoke bombed, and concussion grenaded alongside my neighbors.
Minneapolis has been living through the abhorrent horror of the federally sanctioned abduction of our neighbors, public executions of people exercising their rights, and a targeted escalation of government violence. It's an atrocious and despicable occupation.
We are entering yet another week of this occupation with a deep sense of dread and mourning. We absolutely cannot go on as we have. am sick of generating money for the soldiers in our streets and for a government that won't protect us - a government who is actively inflicting daily harm on its citizens.
Effective tomorrow we are done making money for the fascists that occupy our city. We refuse to generate taxes under the guise of a functioning for-profit capitalist business aligned with government strategy. Amidst many strategic pivots and determined leadership, Modern Times has been barely soluble since 2020. Therefore, for the remainder of the government occupation, we will function as a free and donation based restaurant, Post Modern Times. Everyone is welcome EXCEPT ICE.
Hours will not change but our menu will be smaller. Staff agreed to be present on a volunteer basis, working from shared tips and community donations.

As a young kid on a farm in NB with a TV antenna, I loved a quirky show about a mannequin that came to life at night. When I later described it to my Nova Scotian classmates, they were so confused I decided it must have been a fever dream. Finally in Ottawa, I found my fellow Today's Special lovers.

the knitters too. this is the top pattern on ravelry right now
A red knitted cap with a pointed crown with a braided tassel. It's titled "Melt the ICE Hat" and it's by YarnCultMNn the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.

The sample shown was knit in Blue Sky Fibers Skyland for the DK version.

All proceeds from the sale of this pattern go to the LynLake community of businesses who will distribute the funds to those impacted by the actions of ICE.

For my fellow Canadians who are on this app asking why Americans aren't trying to stop the tide of fascism in their country: so many of them are, more of them every day. All while fighting for their lives. And racialized Americans have been in this fight for a very long time.

That the City is acting on "tree equity" is a good sign. The proven benefits of contact with nature are overwhelming, and access to it is too often split along socioeconomic lines.
