As per tradition already, things are escalating in the ME just as I'm packing my bags to go back to Jordan. I just hope this time I manage to reach the country without rescheduling or canceling my tickets 🥲

That’s it then! 🎓 With just a slight sense of relief because I’m jumping right from my PhD to a scientific project. I’m genuinely thrilled that I’m continuing my scientific career and not going into academia, because I honestly wouldn’t change my current job for anything.

here's a slide with recent publications relating to race and postcoloniality in Classics. this is not exhaustive (and there are several exciting books still on the horizon), but it does represent a significant groundswell in recent years

Untangling blackness in Greek Antiquity, Sarah Derbew (2022)
The West, a new history in fourteen lives, Naoíse Mac Sweeney (2023)

WORD FACT “Sidereal”—of or pertaining to stars—comes from Latin sidus (“star, constellation”). From the same root, we get “consider”: to examine by observing the stars. The root is also linked to “desire”, interpreted as “away from the stars”—to feel the lack of a star, to long for it.

My short story 'The Cave' was published a few days ago in a Croatian magazine for speculative fiction. 🥳 If you're into historical settings, queer characters, Greek mythology and dark themes, you might even like it - and I'd love to hear from you if you do! Free download here: morinakutija.com/mag/

not an original thought but bears repeating: half of writing is just being allowed time to sit on your ass uninterrupted and think about things really hard until you puzzle them out, which doesn't look or feel like work at all. but it is!

The poet Ovid was banished from Rome in 8AD to Tomis (modern Constanța in Romania) by the Emperor Augustus. The council of the city of Rome revoked his exile in December 2017, over 2000 years after his banishment. "My hopes are not always realized, but I always hope." Ovid ancientbluesky
A statue of the ancient Roman poet Ovid. He seems to be in middle age but appears to be still physically strong. His robes wrap his entire body with the exception of his bare arms. He holds a tablet of some kind in his left arm which is tucked across his midriff. His right hand is held to his chin and his gaze is downcast in apparent contemplation. His hair is cut short. The statue has a slight greenish patina, indicating that it's likely made of bronze. The plinth is of a cream stone. At the base of the statue is the name OVIDIVS
