AI Companies Are Buying Antique Books, Ingesting Their Contents to Train Models, and Then Destroying Them at Incredible Scale, Even If Almost No Copies Remain
AI companies are quietly obtaining rare books, ingesting their contents, and then destroying them -- even if they're exceedingly rare.

Bought myself a nice 1820s edition of The Mysteries of Udolpho (with illustrations) before #IGAHull. Previously owned by Gervase Bushe (not the MP, but his son). He also owned a volume of poems by William Mason that I've come across previously - small world, even across centuries!

What edition of Frances Burney's The Wanderer are people buying? I've been looking at the 5 volume set from Scribe, a used edition from Oxford's World's Classics imprint, or a new paperback from Mint Editions. I'd like to avoid the floppy 11+ inch tall printings many obscure novels get - hate those.

Elizabeth Blackwell (c.1707–1758) created ‘A Curious Herbal’ to support her family, drawing, engraving, and hand-colouring over 500 medicinal plants. Her work was praised for its accuracy and beauty, and became a landmark of 18th-century botanical illustration. #FolkloreSunday
Collage celebrating botanical artist Elizabeth Blackwell and her ‘A Curious Herbal’. Hand-coloured 18th-century botanical plates show climbing stems with red berries, an unusual tuberous plant, pink flowers, a purple poppy, a large green leaf with yellow flower, and a dandelion. The collage also includes the herbal’s title page and a black-and-white portrait of Blackwell.

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.
A screenshot from here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02-07-inside-herculaneum-scroll-seen-first-time-almost-2000-years

It explains that the machine learning involves only the detection of ink

Do not obey in advance:
Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.
