When insulin was first patented in 1923, the discoverers declined to put their names on it as they felt that insulin belonged to the public. 101 years later, insulin is inaccessible to thousands of Americans because of price gouging by near-monopoly private insurance corporations and their PBMs.

This week is World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 🦠 This graphic highlights the discovery dates of some key classes of antibiotics – note that no new class of antibiotics has reached the market since 1987 Download & read more here: www.compoundchem.com/2014/09/08/a... #ChemSky #MedSky 🧪
A Guide to Different Classes of Antibiotics. Twelve different classes of antibiotic are shown in this graphic with discovery dates indicated, from approximately 1930 through to 1990. Whether the classes are bacteriostatic agents (chloramphenicol, oxazolidinones, sulfonamides, tetracyclines and macrolides) or bactericidal agents (beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, glycopeptides, quinolones, ansamycins, streptogramins and lipopeptides) is also indicated.

*POKE* 🫵🏼 Which cranial nerves are involved in the corneal blink reflex? Check out these next two cards in my Pokémon-inspired cranial nerve #neuroanatomy series! Alt text has decoded emoji strengths & weaknesses. Hard copies: www.thegamecrafter.com/games/crania... DM or email for digital copies!

Trigeminal Cranial Nerve Card (HP 300; Type: Both)

Line drawing of trigeminal nerves highlighted in yellow on lateral aspect of the pons

Mixed Nerve.
Exit from Skull: Superior Orbital Fissure, Foramen Rotundum, & Foramen Ovale

Triple Threat: Ophthalmic and maxillary and mandibular, oh my! A triad destined for cephalic sensory domination
Bite: Engages a tetrad of masticatory muscles to unleash colossal jaw clenching capabilities!

Strength:
👄 = chewing → muscles of mastication
😱 = carrying somatic sensation from the face → I CAN feel my face because of you!

Weakness:
⁉️ = idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia
🪨 = head trauma or acoustic neuroma… your choice!

"Prominent protrusions from the pons relaying a complex network of afferent and efferent fibers throughout the head" a.k.a. the trifecta; CN VImage of the Pokémon-inspired facial nerve card with yellow borders and purple background.

Facial Cranial Nerve Card (HP 150; Type: Both)

Mixed Nerve.
Exit from Skull: Internal Acoustic Meatus

Scary Face: Seemingly endless combinations of terrifying faces to pull at your discretion... To Zanzibar By Motor Car!
Puppet Master: Show those preganglionic parasympathetics some respect! (+30 if trigeminal is in play for postganglionic pathways)

Strength:
🥴 = making silly faces → muscles of facial expression
👅 = carrying taste sensation from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue

Weakness:
🦠 = viral infection affecting CN VII leading to facial paralysis
🔪 = damage during surgery → at risk during some common cosmetic
and otolaryngologic procedures

The first mnemonic is “PIER”, which stands for Position, Inspiration, Exposure, and Rotation. The second mnemonic is “ABCDEFGHI”, which stands for airway, bones, cardiac silhouette, diaphragm, effusions, fields, gastric bubble, hila, and impression.A comic of Thor, representing the pressor Dobutamine. In this analogy, Dobutamine is a “heartthrob” and can be used for acute heart failure or cardiogenic shock.
