🇺🇦🇷🇴 Sybiha: The recent explosion of Russian drone in the residential area of Galaț proved once again that Russian aggression poses a real threat to the Black Sea region and the entire Europe. Using an expensive, rare, and imprecise Oreshnik IRBM on Ukrainian civilians perfectly exposes Russia’s desperation. Failing on the battlefield with barely any frontline advances in six months, Moscow can only resort to hitting civilians and recycling empty nuclear threats

Pacifism is a horrible ideology for privileged cowards. It only benefits aggressors like Russia by ensuring their victims remain defenseless. There is nothing moral about standing by while a genocide happens and calling it peace

We have been blessed with two great credulity tests for public thinkers: 1. Who they thought is at fault for onslaught on Ukraine, and 2. What they thought of Trump. Failure in either ought to be disqualifying for further consideration in any position of importance.

Trump allies are quietly buying up the information space. They own most social media platforms and will soon own a massive chunk of traditional television networks. Handing the entire public discourse over to a few partisan billionaires is incredibly dangerous

Arthur Spirling is also right that we need conversations about what a paper is, what “review” means, and the correct role of generative AI. Perhaps it’d be a good thing if AI finally pushes us to move on from a system where universities spend taxpayer money to commercial publishers to very slowly produce paywalled PDFs2 with outdated results of publicly funded research

After the Cold War, the US itself closed or sharply downsized many military facilities in Greenland, including Sondrestrom Air Base and early-warning radar sites. Denmark remained a loyal ally, and did not object to US presence. Claims of Danish security neglect are fallacious.

This is basically the view of the world that Plato sets out to refute in the Republic. One of the core questions asked therein is: why do powerful people think the mere fact of them exercising dominion makes it good for them to do so? Sure, you *can* get away with stuff if you're powerful - so what?

Kuvateksti: Seppo Ronkainen otti
Noppe-suden isän Nemon kiinni pannoitusta varten 2000-luvun alussa.

...

Seppo Ronkainen tervehtii kotitalonsa pihalla.

An essential development over the past decade-plus is that the ignorant went from feeling chastened when their ignorance was revealed to banding together and deciding that, actually, they were right. They might disagree at times, but they agreed that ignorance itself was an indicator of trust.
