Was quite bored at the conference today, so played imaginary chess against myself. Hard game, but I had him on the ropes
A chess game. Caro-kann, fantasy variation. I don't know the proper continuation after f3 and imagining is hard so black helpfully traded off to simplify, and then some queen trade shenanigans

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea (La Nausée)

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Today I learned about mountains that don't exist: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountai...
Screenshot of the first paragraph of the Mountains of Kong Wikipedia page:

"Mountains of Kong
Mythical chain of mountains

The Mountains of Kong are a legendary mountain range charted on maps of Africa from 1798 through to at least the late 1880s.[1] The mountains were once thought to begin in West Africa near the highland source of the Niger River close to Tembakounda in Guinea, then continue east to the equally legendary Mountains of the Moon in Central Africa, thought to be where the White Nile had its source. None of these mountains actually exist."

This is probably silly, but every now and then I stop and look at things like viaducts, shopping carts, chickens eating corn, or cats rolling there and back in sunlight and think how incredibly unlikely all of this is in the grand scheme of things. We could've been a barren ball of rock.

People like Kane and many many others that do care about human art and the creative process have been a beacon of hope while trying to navigate making art in this current climate.
CBS MORNINGS ON YOUTUBE (JUNE 4, 2026)

Interviewer: I read that you do not want to embrace Al.

Kane: Absolutely not.

For me the whole point of doing what I'm doing-art is a way of processing life. I don't see the value in outsourcing any element of that.

When I'm looking at someone else's project, if I see an element of the environment [where] they use generative fill or whatever to change something about the scene, it just shuts off the part of my brain that wants to know more about that world. Because I would assume if they're willing to make an arbitrary choice there, they could make an arbitrary choice with literally anything.

the world needs more guinea pig cartographers
A guinea pig cartographer works amongst his maps, using his instruments, with a quill and ink next to him on a wooden table; he looks at the viewer obliquely with a black background in a style that is reminiscent of early modern portraiture. The artist enjoys exploring the histories of art through homages to previous paintings in his whimsical works.
