It's possible I bit off more than I could chew in this one, trying to touch on the basics of habitability in 16 minutes! But hey I got to throw in a self citation 😏 youtu.be/oLwTB3oPz88 🧪🔭👩‍🔬

Rainbow Space Magic 2026 will be on October 3-4, 2026! RSM is free, virtual convention for queer #speculativefiction. Register now to receive updates & Zoom links when the time comes at www.rainbowspacemagic.org #sciencefiction #fantasy #horror
The background is black with lines connecting small white lights in a seemingly random pattern..

The text reads: Building Resilient Communities, October 3-4, 2026

There is a rainbow coloured circular logo. In the middle it says RSM, Rainbow Space Magic. The line of the R in RSM is a downwards pointing pen that is the beginning of a multicoloured circle around the text. It ends above the RS with small images of a dragon and a ringed planet.

Below the logo it says, “A Queer SFF Convention” and RainbowSpaceMagic.org

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

I was just offered to be on a pilot TV show where people debate various "controversial" topics; they wanted me as an expert defending the reality of the moon landings. I turned them down flat. I will not elevate conspiracy bullshit into something debatable. Been down that road. It goes nowhere.

I’m thrilled to be involved in a brandnew European Master's program in #CreativeWriting! Spread the word and apply if you are proficient in English and can write in Dutch, Italian, Spanish, or German or if you maintain a hybrid language practice that combines English with one of these languages.

Internal focalisation: The #POV camera sees everything going on around and inside a character (1st person and 3rd person limited POV). Zero focalisation: An omniscient #POV knows everything inside and outside all characters and potentially all past and future events. #creativwriting #specfic

External focalisation: The #POV works like a surveillance camera. It observes all characters but can only guess what’s going on inside their heads and hearts (3rd person, sometimes used in mystery novels).

Unsolicited writing advice: no. 1026: POV is a camera. You get to decide what to point it at; how close to zoom in; when to cut; how many cameras to use. Make sure what you show makes sense; feels satisfying to the reader.

Just stumbled across this: "Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words." (Ursula K. Le Guin 2014)

An academic publishing company asked me if I was interested in writing a textbook on AI and writing. NO, I said, I am too busy with other projects. What I should have said: I'm actually working on a story about an AI running Mars. Are you interested in opening your program to speculative fiction?
A sculpture of planet Mars, about double as high as a person, displayed on a street. It looks like a huge basketball.
