Walked into a beautiful misty early morning yesterday. Took a moment to reflect how quiet the village must have been when the service personnel left. The display at Aldbourne Heritage Centre shows the last chapters of the story. #OnePlaceWednesday aldbourneheritage.org.uk/ww2mem

In 1851 there were six families in the hamlet of Snap, plus the farm owner and his household. All the cottagers were in receipt of parish relief, at school or worked the land - except for Mrs Ann Grant, the schoolmistress. By 1914 Snap was deserted and derelict. #OnePlaceWednesday #OnePlaceLabourers
Photo shows a large triangular sarsen and a small engraved memorial stone. The small stone has an inscription that reads in memory of the people of Snap Toothill School 5th August 1991. So exactly 35 years ago today the children at Toothill School in Swindon celebrated their project to trace the history of Snap by placing a memorial stone on the site of the deserted hamlet

Wood and copper printing plates featuring sketches of Aldbourne by Ann Sullivan, who lived in Aldbourne during the 1970s and 1980s. I'm guessing made back in the 1970s (but not 100% sure). Now I know how the postcards were made if not exactly when! #OnePlaceWednesday #AldbourneInArt
The image shows copper etched Aldbourne village scenes mounted on solid wood blocks. They are very detailed. The artist was Ann Sullivan who lived in the village during the 1970s and 1980s. The photo also shows a business card for R J Gallimore printing and stationery 120 London Road Marlborough. A postcard with an Ann Sullivan signature presumably printed from the wooden and copper blocks. But there are some differences which may be down to the blocks being worn from use.

Missed out on the purchase of Aldbourne Pond II by Bill Pike at auction recently, with reflections of the fair in the water, and a sketch showing the fountain in place for 1977. I wonder how it looked for Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee? Was a centrepiece created as per the request in the Parish News?
Photo from the Aldbourne Heritage Centre collection shows the village pond at night. This was possibly how it looked for Her Majesty's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Jets of water from a central fountain lit by coloured lights below the water. Lights also hanging around the pond.Cover of the Silver Jubilee 1977 programme for Aldbourne. Red letters spell out The Silver Jubilee 1977 and the royal crest is below in silver print.Aldbourne Parish News April 1977
We invite ideas from anyone who may be interested, for a suitable Pond Fountain Display during the forthcoming Jubilee Celebrations. The Carnival Fountain will be used for the central display, and if someone can design and make an attractive centrepiece to fix to the fountain, it will add to the pleasures of the occasion. This provides a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate one's artistic ability, and at the same time provide enjoyment to others. There must surely be SOMEONE prepared to help the village and come to our aid?
A suitable centrepiece might become a permanent part of the Pond fountain display. Time is not with us, hence the urgency of the this appeal. Will persons having serious thoughts on this problem be good enough to contact the Editor as soon as possible so that action can be taken.
