My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

The CEO heard on a podcast that multiplication is the future, so we need to demonstrate 100% YoY engagement growth with the × key. What in-app notification features can we leverage for this? What do you mean there aren't any??

The practical consequence of using LLMs to generate code is that many developers will find they have unwittingly moved themselves into a role they were probably trying to avoid: they have automated the creation of legacy code and have redefined their job role as debugging and fixing such code.

AI slopheads seem to think that it's some sort of gotcha that people may not be able to distinguish perfectly between human-written and AI-generated text. It's not.

5/ In general, work that shortens feedback loops is the most valuable "metaproject" work that can be done on a project. Doesn't matter what feedback loop: testing, compiling, deploying, getting customer feedback, analyzing data, whatever

Received my copy yesterday, and I'm looking forward to reading it! It looks like the text and images are not printed in fully saturated black, but instead a bit greyish. Is this by design, or did I receive a misprint?

Vibe coding broke people's brains because they had a bad understanding of the software design process. The pop culture model goes something like this: start out with a sketch and then render that same idea in progressively finer detail. So when tools could "skip" to high detail, people went WOW.

It's interesting how "...or get left behind" never seems to be attached to a principle or practice in software development, only to technology. e.g., Teams who do big, infrequent releases really *are* getting left behind. But I don't recall any tech CEOs standing up on stage warning us about that.

Tailscale works on top of the IdP or SSO provider you already use. Leverage the capabilities of these providers for secure access, including passkeys, 2FA, and MFA.

It’s so frustrating that there is this illusion that we are all 49%/49% right now. Us versus them, good versus bad, and it’s all because of the BS that is the electoral system. It’s very likely 70% versus 30% and we’re just not seeing representative government. There’s just no common sense right now

The skies above Paranal are at risk from a proposed industrial megaproject.  This would be located in the vicinity of ESO's Observatory. If constructed, it would irreparably impact astronomical observations. Read more: www.eso.org/public/news/eso2501 🔭  📷 ESO/P. Horálek

World's darkest and clearest skies at risk from industrial megaproject
On December 24th, AES Andes, a subsidiary of the US power company AES Corporation, submitted a project for a massive industrial complex for environmental impact assessment. This complex threatens the pristine skies above ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the darkest and clearest of any astronomical observatory in the world [1]. The industrial megaproject is planned to be located just 5 to 11 kilometres from telescopes at Paranal, which would cause irreparable damage to astronomical observations, in particular due to light pollution emitted throughout the project’s operational life. Relocating the complex would save one of Earth's last truly pristine dark skies.
