frankly, corporations have been pushing this for decades brands are important, not artists sequels to games, movies, etc., are often made by completely different people and companies do their best to hide that

Not only is this obviously awful and completely monstrous, but it's also just depressing how hard this shit is being pushed by supposedly democratic institutions. It blatantly exists to destroy indies and protect large publishers and isolate kids online which will absolutely not protect them

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

It's crazy how straight women go absolutely crazy over any "attractive wolfman" characters in video games to the point of going viral but more games do not simply add one It seems like a free path to word-of-mouth marketing, lol

end result of a decade+ of corps treating art like Product and fine-tuning it to this end, many don't view art as a thing made by another person as a form of communication, they view it as a product like milk or eggs, ergo if you can have a machine endlessly produce things to your tastes, good

As Baker himself notes (and he would know), Apocalypse World moves have a variety of frameworks beyond "10+ = good thing, 7-9 = good AND bad thing, 6- = bad thing," but this is what a bunch of people took away as "the default" for how any given PbtA move should work

The bigger Discourse Perceptual Issue surrounding Apoc World (and PbtA in general) comes down more to "not every roll needs to have the same Move Framework attached to it," which is where you get the common idea that every roll in a PbtA game is like the jokey post linked in the OP

This also impacted things like why “you don’t have to roll” didn’t catch on, and why “some rolls are only to determine which positive effects if any take effect”: these are *at odds* with the mainstream mood of “this is what and how you do in RPG”, subtextually. It all tracks.

Around the time of Apocalypse World being made, one big influence was busily defining how a 7’th level portrait painter had 7d6 hit points and a +4 attack bonus. Another one was claiming to be a game of social intrigue and horror and devoted 65% of its rules text to elaborate brawling situations.

I’m bathtub posting so maybe this is only gonna make sense to me but: one of the reasons Act Under Fire was so quick to become “the” model for the cultural mindset is because of how the most widespread games were all related around violence and skirmish heroics as a primary standard.

Now, this misunderstanding of PbtA— Good happen, so-so happen, bad happen — it's not the fault of the people who've had PbtA presented to them this way. They shouldn't somehow know better, when this is what people have been telling them!

Why didn't these kinds of moves— Pick 3, pick 2, pick 1 Pick 2, pick 1, pick none Exceptional success, success, compromise — become "how PbtA works"? Like I say, I think it's obvious why, but choosing one move to be "how PbtA works" at all was the first mistake.

There are also moves in Apocalypse World that go like this: What happen? On 10+: Exceptional success! On 7-9: Success! On 6-: Partial failure or compromise! If you need a roll for someone taking action within their strengths & skills, cool, just use this template instead of the more punishing one.

As it happens, Apocalypse World has a move for cooking a Michelin star meal. It's not a basic move, it's a playbook move, because not everybody cooks at that level. It works like this: What happen? On 10+: Pick 2 good things! On 7-9: Pick 1 good thing! On 6-: NBD but meal is still delicious.

@homebrewandhacking.bsky.social 's complaint about PbtA feels right: > "I try and cook a Michelin star meal. Oh no! A 7!" > "You partially succeed. You cook the meal but it poisons the reviewer." It's a great example! It nails the problem of treating acting under fire as the underlying template.

I understand why it happened this way, and I think it was probably inescapable ... once it came into somebody's head that there should be, or must be, one template underlying all of the game's moves. There's not one!

15 years ago when Apocalypse World was new and people were beginning to understand and work with it, it was seductive to look at "acting under fire" and see, not one basic move of several, but the template underlying all the game's moves. Like @kierongillen.bsky.social 's classic gag:

Those arguing for mass-adoption of AI art always seem intent on proving the wrong thing; that AI tech will change beyond all recognition. They seem less inclined to prove their argument's much wilder claim; that human nature, and all previous modes of taste, emotion and investment, will change too.

It's easy - and correct! - to focus on just how ghoulish and profane this view of human creativity is. But even if you're the most cynical capitalist on earth, the evidence that people would enjoy entirely dehumanised content, at anything like a scale that would justify this hype, is extremely thin!

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.

Every time a discourse kicks off over whether AI music, literature or art will be "as good as" the real thing, I'm always amazed more people don't cite that **there already are** creative pursuits where human-free spectacles have been available for decades, and nobody has ever wanted to watch them.
