He's done a ton of new work since, but he always seems so happy to return to Astarion. It's a good thing to see

A weighty tome would have been great, but there's a segment of fandom that would have been hateful regardless 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nettle and Bone was my top book of 2022. The one that got me started on my Kingfisher hunt Disarmingly gentle writing of complex characters, by and large. I do find myself wanting to bang the paladins' heads together, but that would make for very short books 😁

I'm in love with her Clockword/Paladins universe. Happily collecting each new one as it comes out I'm not much of a horror reader, but they're all well written too, and what I know of the author I like

Thank you! I'm a T Kingfisher fan, though I wasn't going to buy this book (happy with my own Astarion headcanons, thanx). I so rarely buy audiobooks (they tend to send me to sleep). But I'll definitely consider it

The game writing is so complex that this is both virtually and literally true. I had a fair bit of discourse back in the day with players who wouldn't accept that 'their' Astarion was just one of many possibilities

When I was deep in BG3 in 2024, there was a lot of very toxic discourse from people who couldn't (wouldn't) understand the concept of pan characters. Every player has their own Astarion, responding to the player's choices (and complex writing). But some think their Astarion is the only correct one

I mean, that's just made me 100x more likely to buy the audiobook 🤭 We (us people who game) really have become very prissy. It's nowhere near a top-tier bad word

An exquisite autumnal Puffin Post cover by Jill McDonald. Always love the way her illustrations feel like encountering an animation paused mid-frame & how the delightful madcap motion & sublime screwball astmosphere is always pleasingly spiced with the surreal, edged with something a little darker
The colourful cartoon cover of a 1976 puffin post magazine featuring cosily woolen wearing puffins gambolling on green grass under giant falling autumn leaves in pink orange gold and brown with the title Puffin Post in red letters outlined in black in the top right corner with a pale blue grey sky as the background

Tonight, one of Tolkien's supreme moments of Faerian consolation on the slope of Weathertop, in which Strider consoles himself while consoling the hobbits with the ancient tale of how Beren and Lúthien Tinúviel became one another's sources of consolation in tree-tangled Middle-earth. Remarkable!

Massively looking forward to my upcoming Ted Talk. This will involve me talking to anyone who will listen about my late granddad, Ted, the council house in Nottingham where lived, the allotment where he grew his vegetables, and his long-running day job in a factory where women's underwear was made.

Once more my handwritten transcript of The Fellowship of the Ring keeps pace with dates in the manuscript. At dawn on 6 October 3018, Strider and the hobbits climb to the path that leads to Weathertop. Here I go out of the Reckoning, because it will take many days to write what is about to ensue

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
As we join the great theoretical scientist, he is deep in thought. So still, quiet and focused that he might almost be asleep. But inside that brilliant mind, what new idea is forming? What certainty is being meticulously interrogated? What ingenious theory is ready to change our world forever? (the scientist snores lightly) Ah, it seems he actually is asleep. And that's fine. Science is hard and not every day can be a success. We will come back another time.

In other news, thieving lying mysogynist who stole a woman's discovery is shown to have been... well, gosh, a thief and a liar Franklin could never have won the Nobel Prize. She died long before. Watson had every chance to credit her, at all stages, but chose to take the credit himself. So manly

I remember how it felt the first time I read it - when we don't yet know that anyone will survive. Frodo and Sam in Mordor are the only who must succeed. Everyone else - even the White Rider and all the forces of Rohan - might still die. But the upsurge of hope in that moment leaps off the page

I'm feeling attacked by @theonion.com but also 10/10.
"How a Book Becomes A Bestseller, The Onion demystifies the publishing process."

1. Proletariat becomes literate.
2. Author's creative inspiration flourishes upon marrying spouse with high-earning, unethical job.
3. Author chooses magical being to have sex with, then works backwards.
4. Author lands agent by running full speed into them while holding loose-leaf copy of manuscript.
5. Penguin Random House blackmailed into seven-figure book deal.
6. Editor removes typos and originality.
7. Famous author who hasn't read book reminded they got three glowing blurbs last year from authors who hadn't read theirs.
8. Publisher contacts Merriam-Webster to license all words it's using.
9. Marketing completely misrepresents plot, tone, and author.
10. Terrified independent bookstore owners gamble their razor-thin profit margin on this one.
11. PR firm hires thousands of people through Craigslist to performatively read book on subway.
12. Colman Domingo, contractually obligated to appear in all things, voices audiobook.
13. New York Times oracle nods.
14. Book written for sole purpose of becoming movie becomes movie.
