What is the point of the Budget statement to the Dáil anymore if its entire contents are going to be leaked in advance? If I were Ceann Comhairle, I would be pretty pissed off at the disrespect that the government shows the Dáil in all of this.

It's controversial to say 'Don't kill kids' now. The singer of "Hop Little Bunnies", "I'm so Happy" and "Big Feelings are Okay" is controversial.

It never fails to surprise me how bad some on the left are at doing politics. No need for an agent provocateur who couldn't do it better if they tried.

John Yoo doesn't think that it's torture to put an unloaded gun against a person's head (who doesn't know that the gun is unloaded) and pull the trigger. Nobody should be asking John Yoo's advice on what should or should not be considered to be cruel and unusual punishment.

It remains the case that escooters make up a small fraction of road fatalities, incl deaths of children The overwhelming majority of road fatalities are homicides caused by collisions involving cars & large motor vehicles (e.g. lorries) The media coverage doesn't reflect this

Yes, imagine a party which was obsessed with a single issue and which damaged the UK and its foreign relationships
Tories rule out taking part in Burnham's proposed cross-party commission on electoral reform
The Conservatives have ruled out supporting Andy Burnham’s proposed cross-party commission to work on electoral reform.

In an interview with Sky News, Kevin Hollinrake, the Tory chair, replied with a clear “no” when asked if his party would take part.

Hollinrake went on:

We think this is totally the wrong thing, despite the fact under any system of proportional representation, we’d have got more seats than we did in 2024, in that election.
That’s not the point. The point is you want decisive elections.
The public had a referendum on proportional representation back in 2011. It rejected it.
And we’re in an era now potentially moving into an era of sectarian politics, where you have small parties that represent particular interests, be it Gaza, be it Jeremy Corbyn’s Your Party.
Does anybody think it’d be a good idea for a government to be propped up by one of those parties who have single issue policies that really would be potentially very damaging to the UK itself and to our foreign relationships?

The Irish constitution also provides for constitutional amendment by way of referendum which can be, and have been, used to overturn court judgments. E.g. the 16th Amendment Act 1996 which changed constitutional provisions regarding when courts can refuse to grant bail.

I would also like to see what this defence of FPTP thinks of English council wards which have multiple seats, elected by FPTP, with only one seat up for grabs at each local election. Sould there be only one councillor per ward?
150
Alan Greene @alangreene.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I'm not saying that's a good thing; rather, the idea that a single seat constituency somehow creates a better connection between a parliamentarian and their constituents when compared with a multi-seat constituency makes no sense.
370
Alan Greene @alangreene.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
A multi-seat constituency arguably creates more incentives to focus on local issues, as there may be more than one parliamentarian from the same party meaning that they can't distinguish themselves from each other on the basis of their national policy platform. Instead, they focus on local issues.

Alan Greene @alangreene.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
An annoying argument in favour of FPTP is the idea that any PR system breaks the connection between MP and constituency. This argument is exceptionally annoying given that the UK's closest neighbour, Ireland, has a PR system that is arguably too locally focused. www.qmul.ac.uk/mei/policy-h...

Extra-constitutional action, to put it politely, is part of governance in NI. Jamie Bryson was not shouting about how horrified he was at illegal actions when the DUP were defying a series of court orders during their Brexit walkouts. None of this is a good thing, but one group can't claim virtue.
