I’ve talked about Stirling Castle and Holy Rood before on this account, so why not look at something more modern? As well as the rail-y good text and map samples today, here’s a timetable sample included with our map too! Isn’t there something alluring in the layout & those dream-like names? -Andrew

Pounding the streets; Stirling 1860. If had a penny for every pun I could write for this map…but instead lets ‘change’ tack! Alan Godfrey dashes brightly through his introduction; battles, royals, religion, geography and much more are discussed, but I’m going to focus on railways again here!

Our colour range is wonderful. In a small array of colours they convey warm sands, cool waters, bustling building and busy roads. Our introduction adds to the wonder, mentioning submerged forests, strong-headed fisherwomen and breathtaking building over the centuries. Our maps are never just maps!

The model of a very British coastal town; Penzance 1877. The Godfrey Edition maps have turned me into an unapologetic railway nut. The main reason for this can be seen in our text sample. This new technology spread so quickly, changing the way we all live our lives & where we live them! -Andrew.

This isn’t just a river & a canal, a cattle market and a railway station. This is a modernist artwork: Swirls of colour and stark dark lines swish around calming boxy shapes in tranquil pinks. It feels alive - and in a way it represents life & movement, and the power of humanity over the landscape.

Great men, and the great dreams they build; Bristol (SE) 1882. Andrew here. I might bang on about how beautiful maps are (because they are when you really look at them!), but you probably agree a fair bit if you’re following us. So here’s a slice of heaven; a piece of the mundane made majestic!

This is a fine example of our coloured map range, but it’s not just a well written history of the area and a wonderfully drawn vista that you’re getting with this publication; There’s also an extract from the diverting Kelly’s Directory 1889 to add further historical context. 👍

Inland colossus; Goole 1890. The history of Goole is both breath-taking and fascinating; read the start of Alan Godfrey’s introduction and you’ll hear the clanking of vessels on sloshing waves, the call of seagulls and dockers, & be drawn into the beautifully coloured lines of our map.

I was really impressed with the 'official' handwriting style that seemed to dominate all legal documents, so they appeared to be from the same hand - which is entirely sensible when you think about it!

Andrew had a fascinating visit to "Revolution 250; America's Independence Story 1763-1783" at the National Archives ... and of course there were some brilliant maps there too! Also some beautiful documents too (see post 2) Well worth a visit if you’re in lovely Kew x

Amazing what a touch of colour can bring to a map; water comes alive in dramatic blue, terracotta terraces leap off the page, orderly yellow depicts regimented roads! Today Middlesbrough Uni sits on the allotments & I don’t think the archery ground is used now! Bonus – can you find/solve the maze?

Soul of coal, heart of iron; Central Middlesbrough 1892. #MatchMap Something of a tradition with The Godfrey Edition when there are notable sporting links is we discuss the early history of local sporting institutions. Ayresome Park features here, once the storied home of Middlesbrough FC.

Good morning friends! Andrew here. I'm spending a busy few days in London; lots of #MapWalks and generally having a break. I am of course travelling by glorious train from Saltburn! I've planned some wonderful colour maps for you over the next few days, then new maps will land in about a week 👍

Proud priests & mining machinations; Washington 1914. Another example of seemingly quiet places being filled with story, life & links all over the world. This NEW map discusses child chimney murder, mining disasters & a priest brought down to earth by a sharp tongue. Worth £3.75 of anyone’s money!

This is an excellent example of the towns & mines across the NE that changed the world. The maps of this region build into a deeply interesting history of a criminally overlooked region. The world changed the area too; there’s a great story about an Italian ice-cream seller with a very long commute!

Stand by your brother, and we are ever stronger; Wheatley Hill & Thornley 1939. Astonishing stories of bravery in unionising, the chartist movement and winning VCs in WWI can be found in David and Helene Farn’s brilliant introduction on this NEW map. And there’s more to read, of course!
