Three Nudes in an Interior (1923) pushes Magritte's Cubist phase to its most ambitious extreme. Three bodies in geometric dialogue with architectural space, filtered through Metzinger and Léger. Within two years he'd abandon this approach for Surrealism. #artbots #magritte

By 19th century African-American/Canadian artist Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901), Walking Through a Field, ca. 1870–1880’s, oil on canvas, 22x42 inches, photo: Lincoln Glenn Gallery, New York. #art #arthistory #blackart #blackartist #BlackHistory
From the museum: ‘The painting's bucolic imagery of agricultural workers walking along picturesque paths, tracks and roads~ across crop fields and pasture land, up gentle hills, by rivers, or through shaded woodland is a constant throughout all phases of the artists career, reflecting not only his long-term aesthetic allegiance to American and French Barbizon, but also his childhood roots in Canada, where he helped with livestock on the Hatch farm in the timber town of Saint Andrews, and his close artistic, en plein air engagement with the New England agrarian landscape. In this work Bannister employs a compositional theme of the rural track, depicting both groups and solitary farm workers, and other country folk, some driving sheep or cows. The artist depicts his figures with wood cutting tools to identify characters' hands to identify their specific type of labor and to underline their rusticity.
Edward Mitchell Bannister was one of the few African American painters of the nineteenth century to win significant recognition. He grew up on the coast in New Brunswick, and spent several months working as a ship's cook. He lost both his parents when he was young and moved to Boston, where he took sculpture classes and learned photography. Bannister faced an uphill battle to become a professional artist. In 1867 the New York Herald stated that "the Negro seems to have an appreciation of art" but went on to assert that blacks were "manifestly unable to produce it" (Driskell, Two Centuries of Black American Art, 1976). Bannister decided to prove the article wrong and in 1876 achieved his goal when one of his paintings won a medal at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. When he arrived to claim his prize, however, he was refused entry because he was black. Bannister was a founder and member of the Providence Art Club and was an original board member of the Rhode Island School of Design.‘

The other thing I was very excited about: The Kesh Temple Hymn tablets. I guess it’s more like a block than a tablet. I’m most amazed that people were able to translate these things like woah. The cuneiform is so tiny on some of these! #museum #ancient #sumerian #tablet
A foot and a half tall red clay rectangle block with cuneiform writing on the four sides, no writing on the top and bottom. This tablet is a hymn to Kesh and kesh’s mother Nintur(d) and their temple. It’s beautiful and I wish I could have heard it sung.

October's theme: Japanese Ghost Stories KATSUKAWA SHUNSHŌ (1726 – 1793), “The Actors Danjuro V as a Skeleton and Hanshiro IV as Princess Sakura”, 1783. Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois US. Story is in ALT. #arthistory #art #Japan #GhostStories
The full title of this woodblock print is “The Actors Ichikawa Danjuro V as a Skeleton, Spirit of the Renegade Monk Seigen and Iwai Hanshiro IV as Princess Sakura, in the Joruri ‘Sono Omokage Matsu I Sakura (Vestiges of Pine and Cherry)’, from Part Two of the Play Edo no Hana Mimasu Soga (Flower of Edo: An Ichikawa Saga), Performed at the Nakamura Theater from the First Day of the Second Month, 1783”. The Japanese love of ghost stories found an outlet not only in woodblock art prints but also in Kabuki theater productions. In this scene, Shunshō gives us the story of Seigen, a Buddhist monk, who was expelled from his temple because of a forbidden love affair. Seigen died alone and in poverty and held an enormous grudge about how he was treated. He returned as a tormented (and tormenting) spirit that obsessively stalked Princess Sakura. The artist Shunshō shows Seigen (in Kabuki, Seigen is often a skeleton) accosting Princess Sakura, who cringes in her cherry blossom robes. On stage, the actor was costumed in a black layer with white bones painted on the surface. Shunshō helpfully placed an actor’s crest on Seigen’s shoulder so that we know, in this performance, the role was being played by Ichikawa Danjuro V, one of the most famous of all Kabuki actors. The renegade monk Seigen is an onryō, a subgroup of yūrei that are vengeful ghosts.

October's theme: Japanese Ghost Stories TORIYAMA SEKIEN (1712 – 1788), “Kintoki and Demons Arm Wrestling” from unidentified book, c. 1788. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. Kintoki was raised by a mountain witch and grew up wrestling bears and other beasts. #arthistory #art #Japan #Yokai
Kintoki (also known as Kintaro) was raised by a mountain witch and grew up wrestling bears and other beasts. His superhuman strength was his claim to fame. As an adult, Kintoki served the famous samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu and hunted down wicked demons (oni). The artist Senkien followed in the footsteps of Sawaki Suushi and produced volumes cataloguing a hit parade of demon images. Senkien’s demons came from literature and folklore, like Suushi’s images, but he also made up some of his own supernatural characters. Kintoki was a mythical hero figure with a yokai (supernatural beings) connection, due to his witchy upbringing.

By Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975), “Ozark Autumn, 1949, oil and tempera on board, photo: Christie's New York, 21 May 2015. #arthistory #painting #oilpainting #art From the lot essay: “Benton’s sympathetic depictions of the toiling farmer are perhaps his most celebrated works.”
From the lot essay: "Ozark Autumn presents a group of farmers laboriously harvesting corn by hand. Benton focuses on the dignity and exertion of the men as they endure backbreaking labor without the aid of machinery... Benton integrates the figures into the landscape, with the human form mimicking the curves of the rolling hills and the ominous sky... The dynamism of the work can also be credited to Benton's study of the twisting compositions of Mannerist and Baroque artists like Jacopo Pontormo and El Greco. The impression of the sculpture-like painted figures in Michelangelo's paintings he saw at the Louvre would also remain with Benton and inspire the almost tactile elements in his paintings... Benton imbues Ozark Autumn with a sense of motion through his use of sinuous line, expressive brushwork and rich color, and as is typical of Benton's paintings, the composition has a spiraling configuration, which pulls each individual element into a unifying scheme of visual rhythm. Ozark Autumn is a masterwork of Benton's signature Regionalist style depicting the picturesque landscape and the inhabitants of his native Midwest.”

Major Red State Faces GOP Crisis As Divide Narrows Alarmingly
The political landscape in Texas could be shifting, as conservative voices caution that a deepening divide among religious voters may signal trouble for the Republican Party. During the recent Texas Senate election, the strong showing of Democratic nominee James Talarico against incumbent Republican Ken Paxton has raised eyebrows and prompted reevaluations of voter allegiance. In a recent opinion piece for The New York Times, conservative commentator David French highlighted what he calls the "God gap" in American politics, emphasizing its implications for the GOP.
