There's something about this rhetoric about love and truth, or the first two commandments that never sits quite right with me. It's not that I really disagree, it's just that it always seems to be missing something. I'm not sure how to express it, but I'm going to try. #ldsconf

Trying to remember if I've ever seen an apostle speak directly to the young children in #ldsconf. It's usually a member of the primary presidency, but I do feel like I've seen it before. Just can't remember when.

I'm not sure a story about a strict border official turning someone away for a damaged passport as a metaphor for the role of covenants and ordinances in salvation is the best choice for the moment. #ldsconf

Yesterday, a Mormon church leader spoke about the immorality of gambling. I would focus on the immorality of gambling companies, and the deep harm that gambling--especially online sportsbook--does to people, but I fully agree and appreciate him speaking to the moment. #ldsconf

A couple thoughts about the music at #ldsconf. So far i's been a pretty even split between the new hymns and the most familiar, most traditional hymns from the old book. The ones the choir has been singing for decades. As a ward music coordinator, I relate to this.

Thinking about this idea Sister Chibota discussed that seeing people as children of God helps you look past labels, I can't help but remember Pete Hegseth's recent bigoted screed about the labels he finds threatening and how people who he applies them to aren't welcome in the military. #ldsconf

I’ve posted a lot today but one more thing. I recently met a nurse named Danno. Like Hawaii Five-0. She’s very cool but she looks just like a Danno. It doesn’t matter which series you’re thinking of. Either Danno fits. I just thought that was kind of awesome.

In my photography class I used to do a day where we looked at how photography has influenced presidential politics, and how much cell phone cameras and the internet/social media have changed that. One thing we always talked about was how during Trump’s first campaign he was constantly depicted…

Walked into a room the other day that had "THINK LIKE AN OWNER" in big vinyl letters on the wall. It also had a poster of Elon Musk. This checks out.

Contrary to appearances, I'm not a big Halloween guy. I don't enjoy horror, and the general aesthetic of creepiness turns me off. But I do love seeing all my neighbors and having that community connection, so every year we build this big ol' photo booth and do free portraits for anyone who comes by.

It’s October so it’s time to build Yor’s Minroud, our Halloween photo set. I’ll post the transformation as it occurs over the next few weeks. Here’s the “before.”

Every #ldsconf I think about the last time (>15 years ago) that I applied to work for the church AV department. I would have been one of the people setting up and running lights, sound, and stuff for these events. They told the guy who referred me I was a "solid candidate," but I didn't get the job.

My wife reminded me of the time when we were both missionaries in AZ and an announcement went out mission-wide that missionaries should not buy lottery tickets. Those kinds of announcements come from somewhere. #ldsconf

I'm not qualified to tell the church what to do with its money, but if I were in charge, one thing I would do is stop charging for temple clothing and try to remove any other monetary barriers to saving ordinances. #ldsconf

One of my students confused me this week saying she would be gone Thursday and Friday for General Conference in Salt Lake City, but #ldsconf is on Saturday and Sunday. Turns out her church, Universalist Pentecostal, had a general conference this week too.

I love that Anthropocene aggressively trying to seduce the Pope into giving it billions of dollars of free marketing and trying to leverage the Church’s massive audience is turning out like this.

A friend pointed out to me that people's "social scripts" used to come from fiction (novels, TV, movies) written by professional storytellers, and now they come from reality TV and short form video content, where the words largely come from attention-seeking amateurs. It has made us worse.

Compiling a list of Things of Record that my dad and I have never made a statement on lest this ironclad logic be used in the future to disprove our existence.
A Bluesky post reading “It is recorded in Egyptian and Roman documents that they practiced abortion. Not once did Jesus Christ say the practice was a sin. So either God and Jesus were ok with it or neither existed.”

Folks, we're terribly sorry to announce that there was a LinkedIn spill that broke containment and leeched into Bluesky. While the spill is being handled, we ask that you refrain from discussions about synergy, hustle, paradigm shifts, and praise for grind culture. Thank you for your cooperation.

You might respond, "but what if there was some error in the LLM that generated that reference entry? That's a mistake, not fraud." That possibility is immaterial to the commission of fraud. By affixing your name to that citation, you are taking responsibility for its truthfulness.

While I’m complaining about technology, why does it seem like a nearly impossible ask to get quality audio components and quality video components in the same device? *sigh* I understand part of the reason, but not all of it. Still frustrating though.

Where, oh where is a USB-B cable when you need one? My various boxes of old cables yielded all manner of other USBs, plus various HDMIs, DVIs, RCAs, TRSs, power supplies, and even multiple flavors of FireWire, to make an incomplete list, but not a single USB-B. Ended up having to borrow one.

Does the project involve any work that could be interpreted as promoting DEIA, climate change research, or non-compliant to any Presidential Executive Orders?

Just watched Tokyo Drifter with my two oldest. I didn't expect it to be so... expressionistic. I found myself wondering about its relationship to anime and manga. It came out in 66, which is about the same time anime started emerging as something culturally distinct, based on a 5 minute search.

Mine is that George Lucas can retroactively change his movies as much as he wants, and it’s, like, fine. Even if nobody enjoys the changes. He has the right to make a bad movie. And however you feel about it is… also fine.

OK, LDS/Mormon friends, I need help. Years ago I saw a church musical production that had a song in it that I really liked, but I have never been able to find any evidence that it existed. I thought I knew the production, but I can't find it. Here is how I remember the lyrics:

Matthew 13:12 applies among other things to self respect which you can choose to make from scratch. If you do that God will give you more. If you don’t do that then things get worse

Hey teachers, how many hours has it been since you’ve taught critical thinking? As for the rest, a little of that same thinking will reveal that either a) they ARE taught in schools but may not be the names of classes or b) there are good reasons why public school isn’t the best setting for it.

Completely tangential, but every time I see the name Gordon Monson I think, “man, that’s the most Mormon name I’ve seen since Brigham Sunday” (a real person I know). Plenty of people have one name that feels more Mormon, but a first/last combination? I don’t know many.
