I'm curious: does anyone else's brain work this way? If I'm writing a longer work of fiction, there are weeks where it completely takes over everything but day job/family time & responsibilities, but generally, if I'm not also writing lit crit & producing music, my brain refuses to write fiction.

I benefited from the last fumes of the California Master Plan for Higher Education: paid $17/credit for a great education at a community college, did well enough to transfer to a top UC & complete a BA in English, then went to a Cal State campus for a comp lit master’s degree + teaching cert.

I'm not drawn to stories based on fairy tales or myths (including mythological creatures). I don't dislike them--it's just not a selling point for me like it is for some readers. So that's the background to this: I really like the way Marissa Lingen uses harpies in A Dubious Clamor.
