Unreal. The US government is dumping Asian and African families and children in random countries that they have no connection to. Dumping, not "deporting." Deportation implies the return of a person to their home country. This is treating people like toxic waste. www.cbsnews.com/news/us-depo...

DEI is a corporate term, CRT is a legal framework, Black Lives Matter was a political slogan, Staying woke was a colloquialism. It’s not individual terms at fault here, people aren’t being confused into racism.

The kind of racism Trump & his ilk espouse is old-fashioned, even as it’s dressed up in modern DEI discourse. They get close to saying it outright but haven’t yet—but make no mistake, they sincerely believe white people are biologically & intellectually superior to nonwhite people.

I'm elated to share my PhD keystone paper published @PNAS www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... I've poured my heart & soul into this project since 2016 (8 yrs!) & I'm happy to introduce the Effort Foraging Task to the world #CognitivePsychology #Motivation #Effort #Foraging #DecisionMaking 🧵
Figure 1: Foraging trial diagram. On each trial participants chose to harvest the tree they were at (down arrow key) or travel to a new tree (right arrow key), during the travel they completed an effortful task, after which they arrived at a new patch with a replenished supply of apples. The tree is a green circle and rectangular brown trunk. The apples are red and lined up in a row on the bottom of the screen. There is a warrior avatar with a shield, helmet, and sword who jumps to harvest the apples.

Ezra Klein is basically right here. Gen Z is reacting to the only Israel they’ve ever known, and it’s a Bibi-led Israel that makes no bones about its anti-democratic and anti-Palestinian commitments. That, more than anything, is driving the shift in generational attitudes.
nytimes.com
Opinion | Gen Z Is Listening to What Netanyahu Is Saying. Is Biden?
Israel is losing the support of a generation, not just a few student groups. And it is losing it because of what it does, not what it is.

Is it too early to advertise my poster for SPSP? Come talk to me about immigration and dehumanization Saturday February 20 from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. Also if you want to just hang out :) #PsychSciSky #SocialPsyc
Preview of poster session titled "Of Mice and Machines: Economic thinking and the mechanistic dehumanization of (im)migrants" by P. A. Palma and V. M. Esses.

Poster text reads (paraphrased for space):
Do people dehumanize economic and non-economic immigrants differently?

Anti-immigrant rhetoric dehumanizes immigrants and refugees, comparing them to vermin, ‘floods’ or ‘hordes’.

Economic thinking about immigration has been associated with anti-immigrant attitudes, and may lead to other forms of dehumanization.

Workers and economically competitive outgroups are viewed less warmly and experience greater mechanistic dehumanization, where they are likened to machines.

Hypothesis 1: Immigrants selected for skill and economic contribution are more mechanistically dehumanized; non-economic immigrants are more animalistically dehumanized.

Hypothesis 2: Thinking about economic, but not cultural, contribution of immigrants is associated with mechanistic, but not animalistic, dehumanization.

MLK is a great example of why just following polls and doing whatever is popular at the time isn't always a good idea. I Have a Dream was 1963. The Civil Rights Act was 1964. By 1966, King's net approval was -30, with 44% highly unfavorable. Over time, large majorities realized he was right.

Beyond any “smart” sociological critique of Gay’s resignation, this has all made me sad and disheartened. As a Black political scientist who knows how few Claudine Gays there are, this has been hard to take in. And it’s sad—and admittedly a bit frightening—to know that any one of us could be next.
