Much of the infra structure and development of Mauritius was driven by the French. Of course the Asian endutured labour really liked being treated like slaves.

Note: r currently at peak of the economic/demographic issue. Will soon start dying off. Its a political management, coms issue. Burnham should be talking about an enhanced (new) Triple Lock, attached to a National Social Care Service. Seems he has miset the agenda already.

Confusion and weakness in labour ranks. Middle class people who want to pretend it does not exist and strategists that don’t want to alienate potential voters. Irony is strength, might is right, the strong leader is the way to win over those that are drifting right.

Where there is a will there is a way. At the moment this is simply posturing, but it’s wrong to interpret these noises in the context of the past. We are in a new, rapidly changing, different place now and Carney is very much setting the new scene. I would keep a very open mind about this.

Nah - just hopeless negotiators. Clearly being advised that to get anywhere they have to play hard ball. When in a position of such weakness just means a failure after failure. Worse, each failure undermines UK position further.

We loved this so much we just had to put English subtitles on it, apologies to the French speakers for our translation. But this is what it would look like here in the UK if Farage or Lowe or another of their ilk got their own way.

A Philadelphia nun named Sister Rose Kuhn drives to a Texas immigration court weekly to sit next to unaccompanied children as young as 4 who are facing deportation hearings alone without relatives or an attorney so that they won’t have to face the judge by themselves. Heartbreaking and horrific.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Twaddle. You don’t talk policy to a mob. Spend a little time with these people. What makes them tick is their inadequacy, sense of entitlement, time to spare. It’s the money, big men feeding them the lies, manipulating, orgainising them, that matters. Purge this poison and we have a chance.

Because it’s not intended to connect with the young. It’s about engaging with a retired, working class, mainly northern population who have largely switched to Reform but did not support Thatcher and were the bedrock of Labour Party support.

Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Nah… Shrewd move. If he mops up Reform Votes (big if) as they don’t have a chance, and forms an anti khan alliance he could do well. Khan is very, very unpopular with certain groups. If he does well, but does not win, he is still a stand out replacement to useless Badenoch What has he got to lose ?

This new variant of the Starmer government won’t last long. Same old words and realities. With not a single vote cast for them and only so many local “bus” like initiatives available to them, they be a busted flush sooner rather than later.

Given the mountains of bullshit about AI coming from the mouths of business leaders who are being fed nonsenses from the techbros, I guess most people are sick to death of technolgy. How it fits and impacts on jobs is a huge question that no one, repeat no one has an answer to.

Most Labour Party members live in London and its hinterland. Burnham would be wise to remember this. Manchester has a population of 600k which is less than the size of 2 London Boroughs. London and the South East return over 70% of Tax revenues.
000
Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Tax revenues are also a function of economic activity, generation of wealth. Brexit has made the UKs decline inevitable, fiscal income lower. Any PM who fails to arrest this is on a short fuse. If Burnham does not deal with this he will get two to three years like every other post Brexit PM.

Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Andrew Bonar Law was called the Unknown Prime Minister. Remember him ? Starmer will go down as one of the non entities who delivered very little in the period 2016-2026 as the they failed to arrest the UK’s decline in what will be known as a wasted decade born from Brexit.
000
Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
Not sure these points really matter when key issues are economic decline (low growth) and US, Chinese, Russian nationalism. Starmer dealt with the latter sort of. If Burnham follows in his footsteps his remaining policies will just be moving deck chairs on a sinking Titanic.

Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
It’s nonsense yes- perhaps they should focus on the age profile of the people they associate with this take on things. Try an aged focused agenda that soaks up all the sentimental, fake memories of the all our yesterdays mob who want to make the UK white and poor again so the rest of us can move on.

With the UK in decline the prospect of any PM lasting more than a few years is challenging. Almost like reversing the tide. Takes a leader to spell it out as it is my view. After the honeymoon and refresh… then failure and crisis. I hope not but..

You might be right. My mother was barely able to read and could not write. She would place her finger under a word as she deciphered it. She left school at 13. She was also clever. The point which matters is she was educated by the Reithan BBC. I fear this would not be the case today.

Vengeance …cold meals. He will have his day. My guess is Reeves has taken the blame for a poisonous government when the real problem was a no 10 which preferred minister’s infighting to doing anything. When it comes to settling scores Starmer should be watching his back not attacking Burnham.

Yes - but reality is whatever Starmer comes up with will collapse into disarray and u turns will follow very quickly. This incredibly dysfunctional administration, only knows it’s over in words alone and has not come to terms with its impudence. Give them enough rope will be Burnham’s watchword.
000
Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 21/06/2026
Well - if the country is in decline and if a government is not prepared to tell the country the truth, reality will rapidly catch up with them and destabilise their rule. Then it’s over. As they say, Brexit eats its children and Brexit is only one of the issues.

Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 21/06/2026
He did nothing or did nothing right is the real issue. Only when there were limited options in policy, was there a glimmer of success. What was remarkable was his attempt to describe himself as a leader when he had little empathy, sensitivity and a want to avoid confrontation at all levels.

Andrew Stefaniszyn @ajstef.bsky.social · 20/06/2026
My past experience is a lingering, impotent, leader is the last thing an organisation needs. It just creates time for problems to fester. The same is true for the country. Defering the change means defering the solutuon. Change is always challenging, but best to strike while the iron is hot.
