Water stations are the greatest innovation in warm-weather festivals in my lifetime. Brought a one-liter bottle and stayed hydrated all weekend. Honorable mention goes to tasty packaged iced coffee, nicely counteracts the drowsiness induced by sun, beer & pot.

Basking in the afterglow of an all-timer Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this past weekend in Golden Gate Park. New and old favorite artists singing new and old favorite songs, hanging with new and old friends, in perfect weather. All the things a festival should be! #HSB

So I think these are important questions, and I have some answers myself. But I don't think the sociopolitical framework we use for human learning is likely to be illuminating. Maching learning/human learning is a metaphor, not an isomorphism. Attaching cameras to a computer doesn't change that.

Array sorting was long an intern/starter project, so I imagine it must've come up. @verwaest.bsky.social would likely know

The root of our difference of opinion is that you’re intent on personifying AI while I think that’s a category error. Public libraries are there for residents (for municipal libraries) or students/faculty (universities). “My computer program wants to check out a book” is nonsense to me.

It seems like you’re treating “AI” as an autonomous agent. But Scalzi’s talking about decisions and actions made by people at the companies that built these systems (they did not build themselves). Why should those people not be constrained by the same norms and laws everyone else is subject to?

Sadly I don’t think I can pull off Brendan’s mic-drop TC39 proposal style, so if someone wants this to happen they’re gonna have to do the work

Sorry, sorry, I like Don Cab okay but sometimes math rock sounds like three different cars tuned to different stations with their doors open in an underground parking garage, but it's okay because the most normal men in the world are here to explain how time can be fun to you.

Somewhat surprised that I used "we" to refer to what V8 does. Guess I worked on this stuff for a long time!

Yeah, Float64Array.sort is easy mode: with no args, we call straight into the runtime and run std::sort on the backing store (github.com/v8/v8/blob/m...). To get Array.sort close to this speed, you'd have to already have the right backing store, and then inline the comparator somehow.

All that said, I find it totally understandable if someone doesn’t find “SP” to be helpful. I guess I’d like to understand better how it’s actively bad.

Adam Klein @ajklein.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I suspect this is one reason many folks who are familiar with the technical details find SP bewildering as a rhetorical device. It really is obvious to those folks, and thus provides no explanatory power. But it’s not for them!

Adam Klein @ajklein.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I don’t think Bender intends SP to stand on its own as a predictor of LLM behavior. Rather, it’s a way to say “LLMs generate tokens based on context and statistical modeling of training data” in two words to a non-technical audience.

As an ex-tech AI-refusenik like myself it was interesting to see this post the day after I tried something similar by dumping my upcoming show calendar into Claude and asking it for local shows I’d missed. It did a good job! There used to be upcoming.org, and this is basically a personal version.

Adam Klein @ajklein.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I think I grok what Bender was saying: I hear it as a response to stuff like the linked story, where OpenAI announce that their new LLM is too dangerous to release. They expect people to tie this to the Hugging Face story, though the LLM was not in the top 5 “unsafe” things about that incident imhoo

OpenAI Says It Will Not Release Newest Astra A.I. Model Over Safety Concerns (Gift Article)
The company’s researchers raised questions about the security of the model, known as GPT-6.1 Astra.

Adam Klein @ajklein.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
For a bare LLM, I take it that her response is not “secret calculator” but just “secret training data/process”. And that it’s only in the open source model context where the question of how this might work becomes interesting, because the inputs can be part of the discussion.

Adam Klein @ajklein.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I think she was just being sloppy in that thread with regard to what system she was describing. In the follow-up, she puts “LLM” in scare quotes and elaborates:

i'm reminded that when "social media" started it was called "social networking," and i'd always thought the shift was arbitrary. but i recently realized it's because networking is concrete, it's a direct method for forming relationships. media is definitionally an abstraction of reality.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

NFL’s New Overtime Rules

- First possession per team
- Which comes first: score or possession
- If coin flip is heads, elect to kick or receive. Same if tails, once possessions
- If a field goal is kicked on first possession, team on field must acquiesce

It’s an interesting choice. I felt like Eddington’s reception was hurt by its sheriff’s point of view being on the right wing side. Civil War, instead, just ends up feeling oddly blank. I’d like to revisit both down the line.

There’s rarely enough Discourse about the best films these days, sadly. Reichardt’s stuff tends towards the sad (as do most of my favorites 🙄). How about Perfect Days? Don’t know anyone who’s seen that one and not loved it

For something a bit more off beat, Kelly Reichhardt’s my favorite working director in low-key brilliance: “First Cow”, “Showing Up”, and “The Mastermind” are all great. But some find her stuff too slow

I’ve got all sorts of recs but curious what sort of feeling you’re looking for? “Sentimental Value” was a fav from last year, but is very much in “self-serious Eurofilm” territory. “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” is my favorite documentary of the past five years (very much experiential, not educational)
