I recommend John Higgs’ book Love and Let Die, which tells the story of both cultural phenomena.

Most countries can only dream of a cultural export becoming a worldwide phenomenon on this scale. For Britain to produce two on the same day is unprecedented.

The Beatles are the most influential band there has ever been. James Bond is the single most successful movie character of all time.

Dr No, the first Bond film, and 'Love Me Do', the first Beatles record, were both released on the same day 64 years ago.

In 44 BC Cicero was already discussing the stereotype of the foolish old man characterised by credulity, forgetfulness and carelessness (“credulitas, oblivio, dissolutio”), though Cicero argued these were faults of character, not inevitable consequences of age.

Just look at the glee on Nigel Farage’s face as he watches a Piddington resident cry about the overt racism she, her Caribbean heritage husband, and their two children have felt in the village during the referendum. Time and again he’s showing us exactly who he is.

The moon's orbit isn't going to be affected, it's more about uncontrolled space debris, possible danger from ejecta to nearby spacecraft, contamination of scientifically valuable sites, and the precedent for leaving large rocket stages in unpredictable lunar orbits.

I think the White House badly underestimates the strength of the pan-European folk memory of 1930s appeasement, and how deep it still cuts. I suppose this is what happens when you learn in school that WW2 started in 1941 in Hawaii.

Simple amendments that IMO would have a decent chance of getting ratified:
-Mandatory secret ballot for impeachment trials and lower threshold for conviction
-Banning pardons on members of the president's own family or anyone he has had a business or working relationship with
-no presidential signature required for laws that delegate power to or take back power from the president

The problem is that the Constitution remains revered. A system designed to distrust power now entrenches it, protects it from accountability, and makes reform so arduous that stagnation and decay are inevitable

Yorkie @ajcis.bsky.social · 09/01/2026
The presidency can be won while losing the popular vote because of the Electoral College. This is not an accident or a bug; it is a deliberate eighteenth century compromise that entrenches minority rule.
100
Yorkie @ajcis.bsky.social · 09/01/2026
The Constitution is obsessed with limiting government but is largely indifferent to outcomes. There is little constitutional commitment to administrative effectiveness. The system incentivises obstruction rather than governance.
100
Yorkie @ajcis.bsky.social · 09/01/2026
Judicial supremacy compounds the problem. Nine unelected justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, appointed for life and insulated from democratic correction, now determine the meaning of vague eighteenth century language on abortion, voting rights, campaign finance, and executive power.

Yorkie @ajcis.bsky.social · 09/01/2026
The Bill of Rights contains principles that seem laudable but are deeply problematic. The Second Amendment, for example, has produced gun laws that would be politically unthinkable in any other developed democracy. The Constitution offers no realistic mechanism for change, despite a clear need

The US Constitution was created in good faith, but it was drafted for a small agrarian republic of about 4 million people, not a continental superpower of more than 330 million. Outdated compromises are treated as sacred text, even when they plainly no longer serve a modern society.

America was founded on a bedrock of religious lunacy, racism, slavery and slaughter of indigenous people. The USA has never been a safe place for certain groups of people. There was a period post WW2 when things looked to be moving in the right direction but current events seem to echo 1930s Germany

So the question is simple: if the checks were properly done, where’s the evidence Ferrari had the means to pay cash? Transparency matters when a politician’s partner buys his constituency home.

If the money trail looked suspicious, the solicitor had to file a SAR with the National Crime Agency. If the solicitor didn’t do the checks properly, the SRA could and should take action against them.

By law, her conveyancing solicitor had to check the source of funds under anti-money laundering rules. That means bank statements, inheritance papers, sale contracts etc. This isn’t optional.

Yorkie @ajcis.bsky.social · 16/09/2025
When a property is bought in the UK, there are mandatory checks under anti-money laundering (AML) and source of funds regulations. For a cash purchase of nearly £900,000, those checks should have been particularly robust.

So where did the cash come from? Savings from modest political jobs? An inheritance no one’s reported? A gift or loan from someone else? Farage denies giving her the money.

Ferrari herself has worked as a political aide, then ran the Eurosceptic think-tank IDDE. Later, she set up a consultancy, but the latest filings show assets of about £1,000.

In 1633 Galileo was found guilty by the Inquisition of heresy "for holding as true the false doctrine…that the sun is the center of the world". Threatened with torture, he was required to "abjure, curse, and detest" his belief. His books were banned and he was kept under house arrest until he died

Quite right. There's a few examples. The Catholic church agreed that the Earth goes round the Sun in 1992, following its 1633 condemnation of Galileo, and unbaptised infants haven't been excluded from heaven since 2007.
