James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I almost started the 1st sentence as "this is an experiment"...but an experiment contends the existence of randomly assigned treatment and control groups, neither of which are feasilble for this exercise. That would have been awkward. 110
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 17/09/2026This is a test to see if I can still find my academic people and if they can find me. I met a number of people I still deeply treasure from #SIPS in Rotterdam (2019) or virtually (2020-2021). Since Twitter became unreckognizable, I've wanted to rebuild my network. 291

James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026I'm sure that if anyone asks me what the purpose of writing my book is, I will probably try to do a credible version of Bill Murray giving this deadpan look while saying as Steve Zissou (from that awesome Wes Anderson film, "The Life Acquatic"), "Revenge." 010
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026I take cold comfort from figuring out that the significant portion of the document that was original was done by me (I saved the drafts, so again, receipts). Ultimately the buck stopped with me, and the process was mercifully swift. As anyone who breaks something valuable, I will carry that with me. 010
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Again, I have the receipts. While I am no hero in that particular narrative (not a villain either, but not a hero), let's just say my jaw dropped. I save and back up all emails. Always have. Always will. It occasionally comes in handy. Again, this has no relevance to anyone but a select few. 110
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026The relevant faculty members in that email chain were upset he listed them as an affilate. He was contracted to sit in on the occasional dissertation and do a seminar or two on meta-analysis, but not considered faculty. He had repeatedly been asked not to list them on papers. He didn't listen. 100
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026After the self-plagiarism scandal of 2018, while he was guilt-tripping me, he unwittingly forwarded a whole email chain on the matter at a Dutch university. Turns out he was affilated with one US university but since he had contract work with a Dutch university, just listed it as an affiliate. 100
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026I asked him why he didn't do it I (which in this world implies having a grad research assistant do it) and he admitted he had no subscription for the software. That implied that any data set I sent him was never actually looked at by him. Given the profile of the main project we worked on, yikes! 100
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Bushman is arguably less of a fraud than that guy, but definitely a fabulist, and I do have receipts. One involves finding out that he had no subscription to some meta-analytic software I was using for a project, which I later found out about when he asked me to transfer a colleague's data to Excel. 100
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Part of my research is a trip down memory lane. If you know the name Brad Bushman, you will know that I was a co-author with him for a few brief and painful years. You know about the plagiarist who just offed himself recently once it became obvious his whole life is a fraud? 100
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026To put things in perspective, I am writing a book. The topic is arcane and would bore folks here only for publicity or to solicit campaign contributions. But the people who might be interested completely miss out on what I have in mind. I see a problem with that. If you don't, I just dunno. 121
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026We'll see, I suppose. I know this thread comes across a bit bitter, and it is. It is also honest and heartfelt. I came here for the conversations I had at the time on the bird site pre-Musk. That's clearly missing. If I cannot have that, I simply don't see the point. /end 001
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026I'm also not comfortable with echo chambers. I think we have too many of those already. At the end of the day, I really wanted to reconnect with my Psychology Reform crew (think SIPS and the like). So eventually I'll figure out how to simplify enough to maybe get back to what I originally wanted? /6 100
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026I thought the starter pack idea was well-intentioned but not well-executed. Having the following I have now was not really my intention, and being an introvert just seems exhausting. Any DMs have largely centered on what someone wants out of me (usually $$) and not out of any shared interests. /5 110
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026One possibility is to unfollow literally everyone I don't personally know. That will be an undertaking, and one I won't even want to think about until I get through this next semester. But I think maybe I'd find some semblance of balance again. This may be better than Twitter, but not what I wanted. 100

James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026In the process, I ended up with a feed that is quite frankly a bit of a mess and where I miss out on the content that matters to me. That was an unforced error on my part. I tried creating a second account strictly as an academic account, but I fear the damage was already done. /2 100
James Benjamin @ajbenjaminjr.bsky.social · 18/08/2026Okay. When I started this account, it was mainly confined to other academic psychologists who had migrated from Twitter.
