What a great surprise evening speaker at our National Trust nature gathering this week... Hamza gave such a brilliant talk and then kindly took the time to everyone chat afterwards! 😁

Two men stood outside smiling, with trees and green grass behind them, both are wearing shirts, looking at the camera with an arm around each other. Ajays is on the left and Hamza on the right.

Thinking of my @nationaltrust.org.uk colleagues and all who worked tirelessly to tackle the devastating Dunwich Heath wildfire. The loss off wildlife habitat is heartbreaking, but determination to restore it is underway. Please support if you are able: rebrand.ly/DunwichFireA...

This week, a wildfire has torn through Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, leaving the entire nature reserve devastated. An area of around 210 football pitches has been affected with rare habitats and wildlife lost in a matter of hours.

This week I return to a place I first visited 24 years ago – drawn back by something I couldn’t name then, but now recognise as hiraeth: a deep connection to somewhere that feels like home, even if you can’t explain why. Some places stay with you. They shape you. They call you back.

Habitat generalist butterflies tend to be faring better in the UK. Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) had its 4th best yr at @ukbms.bsky.social sites in 2025. It also had its best yr on record in Scotland. In the UK, its numbers are up 87% since 1976, but in Scotland abundance is 566% up this century

50 years of data reveal specialist butterflies disappearing across the UK, but the good news is that conservation efforts are making a real difference - helping butterflies isn’t complicated, we can all be part of the solution by making places butterfly-friendly 🦋 @savebutterflies.bsky.social

Fantastic to finally meet Dara McAnulty on Wicken Fen and chat nature in celebration of his new book 'A Wild Child’s Guide to Nature at Night'. Dara’s enthusiasm made the conversation a real joy; the children in the audience were captivated — and it was wonderful to hear how much he loves the Fen!

Ajay and Dara stood next to each other, Ajay wearing a black National Trust fleece and shirt, Dara wearing a black T-shirt saying 'Worms Worms Worms', green reeds and vegetation behind and the boardwalk they are stood on, extending into the distance where the Wicken Fen windpump is located, with trees behind it (their leaves autumnal shades of brown and yellow)
